Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Fine return to decent storytelling for Rice
While not as powerful as INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE, THE VAMPIRE LESTAT, or QUEEN OF THE DAMNED, MERRICK is, nevertheless, a return to form for Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. The plot is straightforward: on behalf of Louis, who is still guilt-ridden over child-vampire Claudia, David Talbot approaches his former pupil and enamorata, Merrick Mayfair, with a request to raise Claudia's ghost. A relative of the poweful Mayfair witches, Merrick joined the Talamasca at the age of 14 and has tremendous powers. As she has in other books, Rice employs a great deal of recollection. Much of this book involves David recounting his relationship with Merrick for Louis. Fortunately, these recollections are interesting and inform the reader, as much as Louis, what forces have shaped Merrick. When the action settles into the present and Merrick raises Claudia from the dead, it's a great rollercoaster ride to the finish, full of surprises. I hadn't read a Vampire Chronicle since I threw MEMNOCH THE DEVIL against the wall in frustration. If you've been waiting for Rice to return to form, MERRICK is for you. I closed this book with a smile on my face!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - I own it, I read it, it took me six months.
Look up and see. I'm giving it four stars only because I like what's happening at the moment. But Louis in love with Merrick?! Nooooooooo! He's Lestat's! All Lestat's! Lestat's and only Lestat's! Excuse me while I go off and cry.

Unfortunately I haven't read Memnoch or Tale of the Body Theif yet and I've had them for four years. I loved Armand, Pandora was a bit iffy and Vittirio I only liked cause of the angels.

But this was riduculous. Six months to a read a book by my favorite author? I mean come on! I got it as soon as it came out and immeadiatly started reading it. But when David goes into his recollection of everything...I was just bored! And now Louis falling in love with Merrick?

Excuse me! But no! Anne Rice if you ever get to read this please take him away from her! If you're planning some great guy to come and sweep Lestat of his feet great! But don't wreak Louis like that...itn was just wrong!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Welcome Back Anne!!
Anne Rice is truly a master of beautiful prose. She paints a picture with her words that is truly amazing. While this book is not as enjoyable as some of her initial Vampire Chronicles it does return us to the rich world of Louis, David, and the brat prince, Lestat and introduces us to a new and intriguing character, the distant relative of the Mayfair witches, Merrick. Merrick is a strong willed voodoo priestess that also happens to be a member of the order of Psychic detectives, the Talamasca.

Unlike most of the reviewers I found the David and Merrick background as a nice tie in to color in some of David's past when he was Superior General of the Talamasca. As with all of Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles, the main theme continues to be a quest of finding answers to what lies beyond death and what happens to us when we die. Do the circumstances of our death determine our fate in the hereafter? The book is a bit rushed toward the end, as with all writers today the publisher's deadline seems to influence the quality of the ending, but overall the book provides a beautiful chapter in the lives of the Vampires that ties up some of the loose ends from her previous works. Several allusions are made to her next work that leave me licking my chops for more. Unlike her past couple of efforts I find myself eagerly anticipating her next work and what lies ahead for Lestat and the gang.
