Average Rating: Rating: - The perfect Read Aloud! I have given Jane Yolen's first HOW DO DINOSAURS book as a gift to dozens of children and not one has been disappointed. I was thrilled to find the second one just as charming and fun as the first. It is the perfect read aloud for any child--sick or not. And parents will be happy to have such a wonderful book to add to the "One More Time" pile. I am always amazed at how versitile Jane Yolen is. When my own little dinosaur finally drifts off to sleep, I can enjoy reading another chapter of her new novel GIRL IN A CAGE. My only complaint is that my daughter may be too old when the next one comes out! Hurry Jane, hurry! Rating: - Great illustrations, amateur text I am really quite shocked at how poor the writing is in this book. It feels as if it were written by a high school student trying to come up with rhymes for a younger sibling. Which is a shame, because the illustrations are priceless. The abilities of the illustrator to produce anthropomorphically-correct young dinosaurs looking grumpy or ill is amazing, but the accomplishment is lessened by the shabby text. Doctor Seuss and his like often wrote books that were difficult to read to children by people unfamiliar with the cadence of his writing, though parents fell into the pattern fairly easily after repeated readings. But those rhymes were inspired; the meter was flawless and the imagination wonderful. Jane Yolen seems to have run out of creative steam early in this book and forced her way through to the end. Being a big fan of "How do dinosaurs say goodnight", we were anxiously awaiting this arrival. The story is a fun read and the illustrations are hilarious. It is a must have.
