Rating: - This book changed my life
By making just a few minor shifts in my eating practices for the first time in my life, I have no constant cravings for food. I've spent most of my life either being highly disciplined, while craving food or worrying about craving food. It has been like finally casting out a life-long demon. I've been a Weight Watcher for many years and what I realized is that the basics that Dr. Schwarzbein suggests are the basics I was taught in my first Weight Watcher class about eating a balanced meal 30 years ago. Dr. Schwarbein's book came at a great time for me and it has updated, refreshed and renewed my knowledge while drastically improving my well-being ... it has raised my consciousness to a new level. I am MOST grateful! An easy read.

After two babies and twenty years of eating fat-free, high carbohydrate meals - I found myself 53 pounds overweight. Feeling sluggish, constantly craving sugar, and being rather moody I decided to try the zero carbohydrate diet. Fortunately, a friend told me about Schwarzbein's book as I was starting the Atkins diet. To prepare, I had to shop twice and change my way of cooking. I stopped eating out of the pantry and started eating out of the refrigerator. It took a few weeks to figure it out but Schwarzbein's meal plans were a tremendous help. My husband looked at me as if I was crazy: eating steak and salad 6 nights in a row, eggs and sausage for breakfast, cheese and nuts for snacks, and chicken picatta for lunch. Within one week of starting I felt much better. Within 9 months I lost 43 pounds (I do cardio 4 times a week for 40 minutes and lift weights too). Went from a size 16 to a size 6. Unfortunately, sugar (which I now know is HIGHLY addictive), got to me around the holidays and I put on 10 pounds in 4 months. I am back on track now and look forward to peeling off the remaining weight and returning to my new energetic self.

I tried this programme for 8 weeks because I thought the book made sense. Although not diabetic and not having had a problem with cholestrol (I'm 31), I do have polycystic ovary syndrome and definite symptoms of hyperinsulinism, so felt this was worth a serious try. I did lose 5 or 6 lbs, (I need to lose about 22lbs), definitely firmed up, looked less 'puffy' and perhaps even had more energy. The sugar lows all but disappeared between meals too. Ultimately though, this diet failed for me because accepting foods like bacon/ sausage and eggs, butter, cream and meat being such a significant part of the regime, was too unnatural for me to adapt to. I did try and even enjoyed it a lot of the time but it never felt inherently natural to my body. Swallowing a plateful of the aforementioned before eating my eagerly awaited ration of half an apple or whatever, did not feel right! I've been off the programme now for 3 or 4 weeks and haven't gained a pound, so there is life after Schwarzbein! On the positive side, I have learned and incorporated parts of her programme into my lifestyle and am grateful to her for that. In particular, I'm far more zealous with my vitamin and calcium supplements (though not anti-depressants!), have increased my lean protein significantly, have (as is so fashionable) cut back on my carbohydrate intake (particularly processed carbs) and have added more fat to my diet in the form of olive oil, avacado pears etc.etc. rather than saturated fats like butter and cheeses. For me it is about moderation and doing what feels right. Undoubtedly Dr. Schwarzbein has an important message - ultimately its probably best followed with individual adaptation if it is to succeed for you?
