In this recording we hear one of the great piano performers in Vladimir Ashkenazy playing pieces from one of the greatest piano composers in Fryderyk Chopin; with the utmost quality in recorded sound. And if one needs more convincing, you get two hours of music for the price of one cd. Hard to find a better buy in classical music. Moreover, this cd not only looks good on paper, but it also is one of my favorites to listen to. I usually listen to music to help enrich and exonerate an otherwise mundane (computer) task, and I find myself stopping work several times each listen because I'm overcome by the beauty of these pieces, and the both spirited and soulful playing of Ashkenazy. For anyone new to Chopin, I cannot think of a better starting point (no, this double cd does not cover all his great compositions!) than this recording. Rating: - Nice, Affordable Intro to Chopin . . . This is a great and affordable introduction to Chopin's solo works for piano. This release features both ADD and DDD recordings, and all sound wonderful. London as usual has done a fantastic job remastering the older recordings (to the point where it's very difficult to differentiate ADD from DDD). The price is right, too. If you're new to Chopin, I can't think of a better place to start (although the Sony Classics line also offers some great recordings, albeit ADD, at equally affordable prices). Either way, you can't go wrong, so purchase from both lines if you can! Rating: - Best Introduction to Chopin available Don't know much about Chopin? I can guarantee this will make him a cherished composer for you--or at least somebody who wrote some elegant little ditties. Ashkenazy is a heartfelt pianist who shines in Chopin, although sometimes I feel his pacing is a tad off. No matter--it's a superb performance with an ingenious collection of hits (with Chopin it's easy to put together a "greatest hits" and it be effective). You might get tired of it after you've become a refined Chopinite, but you'll come back every now and then...just to listen. So, to recap: Ashkenazy, Chopin, fantastic selections, great price. One of the first CD's you should buy if you're not already an experienced listener.
