Average Rating: Rating: - Great but with Omissions If you're looking for an all-in-one classical set, this one is probably the best you could get. There're however MAJOR omissions in this collection (as there always are): 1/ No Chopin (I mean come on, a classical collection without Chopin!) 2/ No Albinoni. Wow, how could one omit the Adagio for strings! 3/ Beethoven's work has been greatly overlooked. No Symphony no. 5. Only one piano sonata and none of the haunting violin sonatas! 4/ Speaking of violin, Paganini would've been a perfect candidate for this set. 5/ Where did Joplin's "The Entertainer" or "The Maple Leaf Rag" go? Well, I guess you can't have it all, but if you've become/you're a classical music fan, you shouldn't miss these great pieces. Happy dreaming! Rating: - FANTASTIC! Like Classical Music, but don't know where to start? Have a particular tune in your head, but don't know the title? Well this cd set is for you! It is by far the best collection of classical music I have ever heard. This is what really got me into classical music. I am very pleased with these cd's and I promise you that you will be too. It will become an invaluable part of your cd collection. This cd has music to relax you, inspire you, or excite you. This will be the only classical music cd set you will ever need to buy. Rating: - What a great start! I'm a studying musician preparing for college study, and I recieved this collection from my parents as a gift several years ago. I'm quite familiar with many of the works sampled, and must say this is a great place to begin your love for this stuff. On the plus side, this is an EXCELLENT collection for those wishing to explore the depth and bredth of "classical" music (sorry, that term sometimes bugs me--read the CD jackets and you'll understand why!), for both budding musicians and patrons alike. I must emphasise that this is only most benificial to those not too familiar with concert music--the more seasoned a musician you are, the less useful it will become, and the more the cuts and absence of movements and/or works will drive you insane. The more experienced I've become in music performance and study, the more I've tended to shy away from collections. This one, though not as shameful as many others, still carries the downsides of cutting "longer" movements (such as Beethoven's 5th) and leaning too much towards the familiar tune side. Personally, I think many pieces that are not so universally recognizable may have just as easily been included as Bach's Brandenburg No. 3--such as Mars or Jupiter from Holst's "The Planets," or the first movement of Dvorak's 7th symphony. Nontheless, my recommendation would be to purchase this set, with the intent of exploring whichever pieces or composers found here in more detail (for instance, don't just settle for the Largo--get the full New World Symphony! The whole thing is just magnificent!) Oh, and if nothing else, find a recording of Beethoven's 5th so you can at least hear the whole movement! (AHHH that cut killed me!) Well, happy listening!
