Average Rating:
Rating: - sega brings one of its greatest shooters home
OK.lets get this out of the way: sega's HOTD 2 is probably the most violent home console game to date.In reaction to recent school shootings, sega has decided not to release an official light gun(which,by the way is a must for this game, seeing as it's alternative is a controller which can be very bothersome). Now that thats out of the way, this is simply put,a great game.Having stunning visuals(better than the arcades model 3/naomi hardware),and great gameplay, house of the dead 2 is an amazing title. But it also has something else: replay value, something lacking from many other shooters on the market. You go along branching routes by achieving different objectives in different areas, maybe by shooting the lock off a door,or by saving someone who knows a shortcut. This game has all the paths of the arcade game, plus some made specifically for the dreamcast. It has all the bosses of the arcade game, along with many extra game modes, like boss mode,or time attack. One of the funnest features of the arcade is still just as fun at home, the 2-player mode.Something about blowing apart zombies with a friend at your side brings so much appeal to the title. This game manages to keep all the ambience of the arcade game(along with it's visuals) while maintaining a constant 60fps.One thing I'm going to hint at is a secret.I won't totally spoil it,but remeber how you always wished their was an extra game hidden on the cd....?This is a highly recommended game, but only for the correct audience, thi is one of the few games(in my opinion)that actually warrants the 17+ age warning.By this I don't of course mean that gamers only 17 and up should buy it,but parents of younger gamers will want to have at least seen the title in action before purchasing it and seeing the level of violence.I recommend it for ages 13+.
Rating: - Arcade Games... Gotta Love Them
Yes, I love arcade shooting games so I got this. First of all, you can play the game with just a controller but I prefer the light-gun, due to the obvious fact that you can play the game easier and with more fun involved. The game has a lot of good qualities and a lot of bad as well. I'm sure you've heard the voice acting is terrible in this game, and that is true... but to me it brings out the horror-movie within. I like to watch old movies with their cheesey acting, even though, in this game in particular, the voices can sometimes get annoying. Another thing to watch out for is that if you only have a controller you may not enjoy playing this as much, and you may not even beat it. One last flaw, the music, its annoying and it doesn't fit with the game, in my opinion. I'm talking about the music when you fight a boss, I know it's meant to get you in a fighting mood or something but it just got me mad. With all the flaws, the game has a lot of good things too, like the cheesey acting (i like it, anyway, its like a 70's horror movie), the great graphics, the realist gore, the hidden features, the branching paths, the action, and exclusive features, like boss mode, training, and both arcade and original games. There isn't much of a difference between arcade and original games (except for the fact you can get extra items), and the training mode is extremely hard and annoying without a gun, but when you beat them with the right amount of points you get cool secrets. Anyway, this is, overall, a good game. So, if you have the light-gun, and you're trying to get some classic dreamcast games before they stop selling, you should get this one, but you may want to rent it first.
Rating: - One of the best shooters ever brought home.
House of the dead 2 is an almost perfect translation of the arcade version. If you didn't get a chance to play it in the arcade,it is the sequel to House of the dead, which was a popular shooter that was one of the first that where you hit the enemy counts and where one shot doesn't bring the enemy down. I've emptied entire clips into some of the zombies and they still kept coming. This game is a showcase of the power of the Dreamcast to have great grapics and not experiance any loss in other areas. This game is not for the weak stomached, the amount of detail in this game is better than any shooter on any other system. My advice is that if you get this game you should purchase a gun also, other than not being half as fun, with a controller it is also much harder to beat some of the faster enemys, if you can't shell out another $30 for the gun I would recommend waiting on this one but if can this game alone is reason to purchase one. I've you don't get it at launch make sure it's on your shelf by Thanksgiving because this is one game you don't want to miss.
