Average Rating:
Rating: - excellent launch game
On September 29, 1996, the Nintendo 64 saw its debut in America. With it gamers had the choice of two titles: Super Mario 64 or Pilotwings 64. The former was the obvious choice for many long time Nintendo fans, and with good reason. Here, Bowser has kidnapped the Princess once again, and as usual, Mario's stuck with the duty of rescuing her. Starting with this game, the Princess had her name changed from Toadstool to Peach. Too bad we don't see her too often, 'cause she's hot (especially in three dimensions!) The game scenario is a little different this time around. Mario must leap into paintings inside the castle to enter new worlds. Each world contains seven stars. You'll need a certain number of them to enter certain stages. There are 15 main worlds, plus a number of secret stars to obtain, bringing the grand total of stars to 120. The play control, though a little tricky at first, proves to become second nature after a while. There are even three caps you can obtain, and in their switch domains, secret stars await. Unfortunately, this game is far from perfect. The major flaw: THE CAMERA. If something gets between Mario and the camera, it's REALLY GONNA MESS YOU UP! At times it tends to get caught on things in the environments you explore. Another flaw: Voices. Princess Peach/Toadstool has a very nice, soothing voice which matches the nature of the character. Mario, on the other hand, sounds, well, let's just say his voice ain't too cool. Come on, is that really the way he should talk? The Mario cartoons all had better voice actors for Mario than this game. All in all, a pretty sweet game, and an instant Nintendo classic. Though a launch title, it has stood the test of time. Even most games in the N64's dying days couldn't live up to this one. You can't have an N64 and not have this. Oh, and one more thing: LUIGI IS NOT IN THIS GAME!
Rating: - It's a me Mario!
Super Mario 64 is a dazzling game full of enjoyment. Princess Peach invites Mario over for some cake one day but her castle is overthrown by the Koopa King Bowser. Mario must save the Pricess by collecting stars to defeat Bowser who has made paintings which are really hidden worlds all over the castle. Mario encounters vast worlds hidden with stars. Mario must return the stars to open new doors that lead to more portraits that are full of friends and foes to meet. The worlds are battlefields, a snowy mountain, a foggy bay, a sky castle, haunted houses, lava filled seas, islands, a tall mountain, Bowser's secret worlds and lots more! The gameplay is easy to learn. Mario has a bunch of new moves to show off with a few powers like a flying wing cap. The graphics are alright and the design is good. 3D worlds make it come to life. The bosses and challenges are tough but fun. This game is fun for the whole family. This is a really great adventure game. I recommad it to everyone. I also recommad the Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask and the Ocarina of Time. If you like racing games get Mario Kart 64.
Rating: - Its a me Mario!
One of the launch titles for the N64 back in '96 Super Mario 64 had only a small band of rivals at the time. The most prominent being Star Wars Shadows of the Empire and Star Fox 64. The game has stood the test of time in several factors. One you can still find it brand new. Two the previous games mentioned are almost impossible to find unused! Three for a launch game the graphics were great, but they are not as good as late comer Banjo-Kazooie. The story line is interesting and the levels are big, but not as large as Banjo-Kazooie. You have to find 100 Power Stars that Bowser stole from Princess Peaches's castle, and if you get all 100 you can go to a cannon near the castle, hop inside, shoot onto the roof of the castle, meet Yoshi (Mario's dinosaur friend) who will give a super new jump and 100 lives! The games levels are challenging espicially the last few levels and the levels where you fave Bowser (you have to beat him three times) are DANGEROUS especially the last one. From the sea to land to desert to snow covered mountain and to the desert and beyond Mario must battle enemies in 3-d and collect six stars on every level. Five stars are attainable by completing tasks while the sixth is attainable when you collect 100 coins on a level. The music is hummable and the characters are nice and mean. This is still Marios biggest adventure and with the coming of the Gamecube and the fall in price for the Nintendo 64 and its games, Super Mario 64 is a must have. I've had my 64 since Christmas '97 and also received Super Mario 64 which is still a GREAT game!
