I am sick of all the system bashing I am reading on here! If you don't like PS2, that's fine, but do you REALLY know they are defective, if the store YOU work for gets some faulty ones in? If it were terrible, consumers would have made outcries. I have had mine since the day it came out, and I have had no problems and did not have to buy any extras to play DVDs. Saying XBOX has better games is a FACT is a statement only a child would make! Obviously, this is simply a matter of opinion and can only EVER be such! Believe it or not, not EVERYONE loves Halo! I don't know the XBOX well, and so I won't comment on it! Even if I did, I would still like the games on PS2, and I personally think the controller is much better on PS2 as far as handling goes. PS2 has some great role playing games, and by far the most extensive library. Sure, the XBOX is a more powerful system by the specs, but what really matters when you get down to it is: WHAT GAMES DO YOU LIKE TO PLAY? Figure that out, see what's available, and make your decision based on that! If you don't you'll get "better" graphics on XBOX and perhaps wish you could play games like Final Fantasy and THE ENTIRE LIBRARY OF PS1 GAMES! Second, see which controller fits your hand better if you still cannot decide. OVERALL, very pleased with my system and the wide selection of games.
Rating: - ps2 is old news XBOX reigns now
I have worked in the game industry for a couple of years and I own XBOX, ps2, gamecube, dreamcast, ps1, Gameboy Advance, sega game gear, n64 and I know what im talking about.I guess with the current games that are being designed for both XboX and Ps2(i don`tmention GC as it is OUT of contention),the XBOX versions LOOK, PLAY and SOUND much better. The obvious reason for this is nothing but all the gameing experience microsoft has. Lets get something straight for the ps2 fanboys who claim XBOX is a pc. XBOX doesnt support keyboards and mouse like ps2, buy an ethernet adapter ps2, buy a hardrive ps2, SONY COMPUTER entertainmnet company, now who is trying to be a pc...uh lets see ps2.They even have the word "COMPUTER" in their name... sheesh talk about wanting to be a computer.Lets not forget that SONY COMPUTER entertainment company IS a tv, vcr, COMPUTER company, So get a life fanboys if you try to make a case how about using some facts and not just " its better because...uh, idont know". Now that I put the fanboys in their place...XboX is definitely a much better game console than ps2. ps2 is a wanna be low budget computer. How strange people oppose this !!! Ps2 is very smilar to a 1980's PC and [sub-standard] games from PSOne`s days, are looking just as [sub-standard]on Ps2. Now, in the case with XboX, which destroys ps2 , the games for it look amazing while on the ps2 they look like a bad joke. I recommend anyone who`s looking for a console in the next few days, buy an XBOX, purely because of its games and the quality they contain. Heres a short list from the more than 200 games available:Halo-XBOX exclusive Splinter Cell-Online downloads Medal Of Honor Frontlinethe only version with multiplayer. Mechassault-Online-XBOX exclusive 007 Nightfire Panzer Dragoon Orta-XBOX exclusive Unreal Championship-Online-XBOX exclusive Moto gp(the good one from thq not namco) online-XBOX exclusive Project Gothom Racing-XBOX exclusive UFC TAPOUT-XBOX exclusive Crimson Sea-XBOX exclusive Dead or Alive-XBOX exclusive and many more EXCLUSIVE games that just cant be done on the weaker ps2. and all of these games got a rating of 8.5 or better. These games are specifically designed for the XBOX and you wont get the kind of detail on ps2 or the gamecube, although gamecube is also far superior than ps2 but no where near the quality of XBOX. Also the ps2 has a rep of breaking down really fast, my ps2 broke within 2 months and my replacement did not even work. If you stand it on its side it causes the dvds not to be read anymore. ps2 is poorly designed and built even worse, please dont throw away two hundred bills on the piece of garbage, you will regret it big time. ps2 is so old news its time to play with the big boys. The online play for ps2 is a joke, if you want to communicate you have to type(JUST LIKE A COMPUTER) XBOX LIVE all you have to do is speak. This ones my favorite fanboy line.." you have to buy a remot to play dvds" yes they are right, but they never mention that ps2 owners have to buy memory cards, ethernet adapters, another system because ps2 is [poorly built],etc why dont they mention that, thts why they are called fan BOYS!!! So, no holds barred, XBOX is the ONE you must get if you want Quality games. know why they are passed to PC and XboX by. Also ps2 has lost almost all of its exclusives,Medal of honor, metal Gear, NBA Street, all the EA sports games, Midnight Club racing 2, Red Faction 2,etc and they look, play, and sound better on XBOX and thats a FACT SO BEAT THAT !!! Now they do try to port XBOX games to ps2 and they turn out [less than acceptable], wreckless went from beautiful on XBOX to disgusting on ps2, also they are trying to port splinter cell but they have to remove the lighting, the high res textures, and the dolby digital surround, it looks horrible. XBOX REIGNS and will REIGN till XBOX NEXT releases in 2005. Sorry ps2 it was a good try, but its time to go back to making tvs vcrs and computers the XBOX has shown you up BIG TIME. ...
Rating: - A bit outdated, but still an excellent system.
Purchased a PS2 a little over a year ago for the family and I, and it is without a doubt, a lovely little system. It's really a system that both young and old can enjoy, there's really something for everybody. My two kids love it, it has many games that are geared toward their age group (7 & 14 years old) and it also has older oriented games that I often enjoy and even my wife enjoys on occasion. An endless selection of software to choose from in every genre, such as platformers, RPG's, Racers, Shooters, Puzzles, Fighters, Sports, etc.. Just to name off some software we've enjoyed on the system, includes Gran Turismo 3, Ratchet and Clank,Final Fantasy 10, Metalgear Solid 2, Jak and Daxter, Ico, Hot Shot's Golf 3, Kingdom Hearts, Tekken tag, Sly Cooper, Need for Speed, Suikoden III, Madden 2003(online as well), SOCOM(also online) Tony Hawk 4(online) Grand Theft Auto Vice(do not let young ones play this one) Medal of Honor, NBA Street and many others. The graphics and sound in many of these games are quite stunning, amazing what technology can do these days. Some games even have 5.1 and DTS as well as Pro-Logic 2 support, making these game sound stunning on a good setup. Another clever thing it does is play DVD movies as well as music CD's. It plays movies right out of the package, no need for any perphrials. Unless you want to buy the Sony remote seperately for a few bucks more. Connected via component, PS2 outputs a beautiful picture, suprising considering the relatively low price. The console has an optical out for all your 5.1, 6.1, and DTS needs, and like the picture quality, everything sounds superb. So far out of maybe 100 DVD movies I've watched on the system to date, I had maybe 1 or 2 skip in a certain chapter, so it seems to handle most movies well most of the time. And I've seen one or two reveiws posted here that machine makes noise, but it must be special to them since I and some of the people whom I know that own the system do not have that problem, just thought I'd mention that...What else is clever is that the system also plays all of the original Playstation games as well. It's compatible with all PSX/PS1 games so if you still have your selection of PSX games sitting around and want to enjoy those from time to time, the PS2 plays all of those and also enhances PSX titles graphics by smoothing out the image. There is also an option to speed up load times for PSX games but I'm not privy to what a difference this really makes. The control pad is also nice. It fits very comfortably into young hands, as well as adults. It's not too small but not oversized either so it works well. The twin rumblers built in are also quite effective with most games. The buttons I've noticed are pressure sensitive as well. For instance, if playing a racer, if you pres the button slightly, the car will move slow, but press it hard and the car will burn rubber. Thought that was a nice touch. But whats better, and didn't know until my son informed me, is that the console also has USB ports to connect accessories such as modems, printers, scanners and even a steering wheel that's compatible with almost all the racing games available for the machine. It'also has an i.LINK input but haven't used this feature as of yet. As for memory cards, it has to slots that hold 8mb each, whch is quite a bit for game saves. You can also use your memory card save and bring it to a fiends house and use it in their machine, something my older son often does. For online play, the console currently has a network adaptor available to play games online, sold seperately, so if online gaming is your thing, then you'll be happy with this feature. You connect the modem back of the system, and the adaptor includes both a 56k and Cable input. my son convinced me in buying the adaptor and we're enjoying alot actually. I was suprised to see that playing games online for PS2 is free, for some reason I figured there would be a monthly fee or something but there is not. Overall, this is the system to own in my view. I've been doing some research on the other consoles online and at few local stores but the software available as compared to PS2 is simply miniscule. I would suppose they're good systems to own but they simply lack the software to appeal to all audiences whch is clear when observing it's software selection online or in the store. There isn't much I can gripe about, it has great games for all age groups, plays DVD movies better than average, comfortable gamepad, online play option, and quality built. Me recommendation is do your research as I did for what game console is right for you and your family as I did, but as I found out, PS2 is the smartest investment. It has something for everyone.
