Rating: - It's a dream... (don't worry, no spoilers)
In a word, Cowboy Bebop is COOL. If you're an anime fan and haven't seen Cowboy Bebop ..., BUY IT. This is as close to perfect as I've ever seen anime get. There's more heady, artsy stuff out there (Serial Experiments Lain) and you don't get rampaging mecha (the mark of good anime for some), but what you do get is flawless. And you get a lot. Bebop has been described as noir-meets-spaghetti western-meets-70's action show-meets... well, you get the idea. It's equal parts comedy-tragedy-action. It's wonderfully eclectic and draws heavily from / gives homage to pop culture. Some say that Bebop has a lot of "filler" episodes that don't advance the main plotline. That might be true at times, but every episode advances character development (in addition to exuding a unique charm of its own), creating warm and deep characters (notably Spike, Faye, and Jet). The main characters are wonderfully fleshed-out with interesting inner conflicts. And everything in Bebop drips and oozes with style, from the episode plots to the greater plot/theme to the CG backdrops to the character designs to the charming episode previews to the broad and too-amazing-for-words Yoko Kanno soundtrack (you might find yourself buying this, her best work, soon after the DVD's) featuring jazz/blues/pop/rock... Every aspect of Bebop is so obviously someone's labor of love. If you haven't already done so, treat yourself. And keep an eye out for the Bebop movie, scheduled for "wide" American release in early 2003.
Rating: - Anime has never been so good!
No series that I have ever seen in prime time television, cable, or imported anime, has ever compared to what Cowboy Bebop is. It's a complete breathe of fresh air in a time where America is fascinated with the absolute worst our neighbors in the pacific have to offer. To know what I mean just watch a little bit of Saturday morning cartoons these days, or even the once respectable Toonami on cartoon network(who runs the show Bebop might I add....just at 1:00 am on weekdays) What you will see can not be described as either intelligent or original. However Bebop manages to be both, intelligent and original, and then some. With its interesting cast of characters, who enthrall you from beginning to end of the series, some very impressive writing, excellent animation, and a soundtrack of American style blues and Jazz, so good it's hard to believe it was in made Japan. Its easy to see why this was a number one animated television show when it first aired. It simply oozes with style, each episode a different approach from the last; the series never grows stagnant. It continues to grow along with its audience and leaves you with a sense of wonder in its creative dynamic presentation. If you have ever even pretended to like anime, you will love Cowboy Bebop.....to give a Synopsis of the whole series would never do it justice.
Rating: - Anime with Substance
I have heard some about Cowboy Bebop and how fantastic/great/terrific it was. Typically, anime that I've seen set in space failed to interest me, so I was wary about buying the DVD's. Then I read news that Cartoon Network was picking up the series. So I could either watch the censored, dubbed (gack) version or buy this new box set that was just released and watch it in the original form and language. I have to say that this series blew me out of the water. Worth every penny. It amazed me to see how human and serious the stories can be one moment, and how hilarious they could be the other. The depth of characterization was refreshing. I enjoyed how the series was NOT kiddified with giant mallets and "super-deformed" character outtakes. An adult tone was maintained throughout. Not that I dislike such things, but they don't belong in Cowboy Bebop. The animation itself was top-notch, with flowing characters and vibrant colors. Small details make the series a total standout. I love how when the guns fire you can see the slides move back and shells fly out. Each even has it's own distinct firing sound. Such attention to detail makes US cartoons look positively sick. Cowboy Bebop is unique in how each episode exists almost as it's own entity. Yet somehow each contributes in a way to the greater story that is overhead. Beware of other reviewers that don't give spoiler warnings. I won't go into episode detail, just watch for yourself. ^_^ I sometimes wish that it was longer, but all good things come to an end. Oh, and see it in JAPANESE! I have to admit that the English voice actors are better than usual, but they still can't hold a candle to the originals. Especially with the voice of Spike Spiegel. In the dub, the voice actor is just trying too hard to sound cool. Yamadera Kouichi sounds smooth and mellow, with a nice richness to his low voice. A great show is meant to be seen in it's original form and language, as any true anime fan would agree. If you buy this set, then you can see it how it's meant to be seen. A truly great series!
