Average Rating:
Rating: - What Else Can Be Said?
Casablanca is the kind of movie that people are talking about when they use the phrase "classic movies". What makes it so classic? For starters, there is such a well constructed script, full of memorable dialogue and scenes, which is all the more impressive given the chaos under which it seems to have been written (I've read the writers didn't even know how they were going to end it and that it changed on almost a daily basis). Then there is Humphrey Bogart, the epitome of "coolness" as Rick, the cynical, detached night club owner. There's Claude Rains, witty, charming, and sly as the chief of police, in a perfect performance. There's a great supporting cast, including Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre. There's a terrific musical score, as well as fine direction (in a style that you wouldn't expect from Michael Curtiz). If anyone considers themselves a fan of movies, this film is required viewing.
Rating: - The Best of all time? Possibly.
I'd like to start by saying that anyone who doesn't like this movie obviously is culturally deficient, can't recognize greatness and is probably on ritalin (for Attention Deficit Disorder) right now. I mean, what's not to like? The movie has Humphrey Bogart, only the coolest leading man of all timewith H. Ford's Indiana Jones behind him), a REAL babe in Ingrid Bergman, not some plastic material-girl, Claude Rains as the classic opportunist and just the champion-song for atmosphere, "As Time Goes By". Enough said! But that's not enough. Combine these elements with a politically savvy story and plot, a wonderful, sexy romance and a mysterious, exotice locale, and what you have is a world-beater. But wait, there's more! In addition to all the aforementioned elements, the movie had enough quotes and well-delivered lines that it changed forever the English language. Being a lover of Shakespeare, this is what I love the most. "Here's looking at you, kid", "Louis, I think this is beginning of beautiful relationship", "Major Strosser has been shot. Round up the usual suspects," and on, and on, and on. I loved "Citizen Kane", but love is to weak a word to describe my feelings for "Casablanca". The best of all time hands down.
Rating: - Casablanca is best because it reflects reality
Casablanca is simply the best Hollywood film ever made. Its script is flawlessly constructed and flows evenly, with magnificent performances by all involved. The best thing about the movie seems to be that it is efficient: every scene and every line adds something to the story. Not a moment is wasted. While not the best performance in his legendary career, Humphrey Bogart is unforgettable as Rick: the reclusive nightclub owner. Bogart plays the role with restraint and sincerity and best of all, follows the flow of the story in that he doesn't lay all of his cards on the table immediately. Ingrid Bergman lights up the screen like no other leading lady ever has with that stunningly angelic visage. And, during a time of wholesale segregation in American society, I thought Dooley Wilson held his own well as Bogie's piano playing sidekick. Casablanca doesn't pander to the audience with classic romanitcism. If it were produced today, Hollywood would have Bogie get the girl, keep the bar, and win the war single-handedly. Sadly, he doesn't on all fronts, but that is part of what makes the movie magical--it is pretty much like real life.
