Average Rating:
Rating: - From a martial arts standpoint
I'm a TaeKwonDo instructor from the US living in Korea. I've been here for 6 years. I started doing the Tae-Bo DVD with my wife. She's not very athletically inclined so she thought this would be a good way to get in shape. I find it hard to believe some of complaints I've seen about this series. Who cares about the production quality or the fact that the music isn't something popular? The point of this series is to get a workout and I for one think it delivers. Some people complain about injuring themselves or about the moves being impossible to perform. I've also noticed some of those complain about the level of the workouts. Obviously, it's hard to ramp up from absolute beginner to professional athlete in just 4 tapes. As a martial arts instructor I would offer this advice. Start with the Instructional video. Do it all the way through. Practice the techniques. Do them on both sides. Use that as your workout for at least two weeks. Watch the way techniques are done and make sure you are doing them correctly. I would be willing to bet that people who injured themselves did so because of poor technique or trying to do too much, too quickly. By the end, you might want to do it twice through each day. Then step up to the beginner workout. If you find it difficult, put it on pause for a few minutes, catch your breath and then keep going. Actually, Mr. Blanks suggests that himself on the video. After you can comfortably do the Basic workout (at least 1 month after, probably more for older adults), add the 8-minute workout to it. I would suggest doing the 8-minute workout first, then the Basic. When you've adjusted to that, do the Basic workout twice in succession each day. Then, when you can do that comfortably, go to the Advanced workout. As a workout, I think it's excellent. From a self-defense standpoint, I wouldn't really recommend it. Of course there is some protection benefit from learning basic techniques and getting in shape but he teaches these techniques from a workout perspective not proper martial arts technique. As one example, he stresses that when you execute techniques you should tighten up various muscles. This creates more resistance and so gives a better workout. This also slows your techniques down. When practicing martial arts, you want to stay loose until the point of impact. This gives you more speed and ultimately more power. If you really want to learn self-defense, take a martial arts class and stick with it. As a last point and small pet peeve, Koreans actually pronounce TaeKwonDo just as it looks with Tae sounding like Day not Tie. I think this got confused with Thai kickboxing early on and just got spread that way. In summary, if you want good production quality, go sit on the couch and watch Titanic again. If you want to learn self-defense, go to a martial arts class. If you want an excellent series of workout videos, buy Tae-Bo.
Rating: - Best Cardio Kickboxing Videos Available
First of all avoid the DVD version of this because DVD's can skip and ruin your whole workout. Videos don't have as good a picture or sound, but how good do they need to be when you are exercising? You don't need top quality picture to see and understand what the video is telling you to do. Billy Blanks has done a great job in putting together this Tae-Bo workout. He draws on his years of kickboxing and martial arts experience. Kickboxing is the absolute best aerobic activity you can do, next to running. It's relatively easy on your joints and doesn't require great athletic ability to do this and have fun. There are various levels and an instruction video. These videos are not from a person who is happy on life. They are made by a proven martial arts and fitness professional who really knows what he is doing. Just take a look on the internet and see the success results that people have gotten from these videos. As long as you are committed to exercising, these videos are for you. You don't need any special equipment other than shorts or sweats and a t-shirt and appropriate shoes. You will sweat so have a towel and water close by. Ease into these videos because they are tiring. I recommend these videos to anybody serious about exercising. Billy Blanks is a proven professional in the martial arts world and he really has a lot fo good stuff to teach. Just make sure you have the room to thrown punches and kicks wherever you want to work out.
Rating: - Great workout-but low "variety" factor
Overall, I'd give this tape a "4 stars" for the workout, but a "2 star" for the music and the variety of moves. (I'm an "advanced beginner", so I'm mostly only commenting on the instuctional and beginner workouts) I've taken similar classes at my local gym, and found them to be very similar to this tape, with one exception: THE VARIETY OF MOVES. Now, I'm NOT the most coordinated person on the planet, but even I was disapointed that the beginner workout didn't have more combination moves to try. I watched the advanced workout, which was MUCH better--PLENTY of variety, but is way too fast-paced for me to keep up with just yet. For instance, the beginner tape has the perfect pace, but the sequence of "3 sets of left kicks, 3 sets of right kicks, 3 sets forward kicks (each leg), 3 sets back (each leg) gets a bit stale. There are really only 2 parts that have fun combinations of punches and kicks to try, and they are pretty brief. HOWEVER, in Billy's defense, the workout you get is REALLY good, if you don't mind that it is somewhat monotonous. Maybe it is even intended to be that way, so you can pick up the moves, I don't know. All I know is I can't wait to get to the level where I can try the advanced workout, because it looks MUCH more exciting!P.S. About the music: I was disappointed to find that you couldn't do "instruction only" on this tape, and use your own music, because, as warned by other reviewers, it is pretty bad! But I was working to hard to notice much, anyway.
