Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Best deal on the market
I researched a grind and brew coffee maker for 3 months before purchasing this one. I'm thrilled with it. I used to work at prominent kitchenware store and didn't hear good customer reviews about the Cusineart Grind and Brew and the Capresso.... The Melitta makes a great cup of coffee, it's easy to use, grinds the beans quickly and you get your choice of course to super fine. The only programing is easy as is the clean up...no hassle which was important to me. The only thing I have noticed is that you need to use more scoops of beans than specified. (I make 4 cups each morning and use about 3 scoops of beans for strong coffee)...

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Quest for the perfect coffeemmaakkeerr!
I'd had my eye on the Cuisinart Grind & Brew for some time, and I was not yet aware of Melitta's Mill & Brew. Although I thought the Cuisinart was too futuristic looking, I ended up buying it anyway. I took only the instruction manual out of the box, waded through it, and felt intimidated! Somehow I ended up here reading about all the pros and cons of Cuisinart, Krups, Capresso, and Melitta grind/brew machines. After absorbing all the reviews, my heart was set on the Melitta M&B. I returned the unused Cuisinart to the store and soon placed my order for a (white) Melitta. (By the way, my local stores only seem to carry it in black. I don't like black appliances, don't tend to look at them, so that's why I wasn't aware of Melitta's M&B until I got here and saw it in white.) Melitta's instructions were not nearly so intimidating as Cuisinart's. I was soon making my first M&B coffee; it was easy and fun. My "ritual" includes the following: (1) Make sure the coffeemaker is clean; (2) Distilled water only into my "virgin" M&B (hopefully this keeps down the buildup of hard water mineral deposits inside the water reservoir); (3) Use fresh coffee beans (buy the smallest amount can practically get away with - I've learned that coffee beans are delicate, perishable, and don't respond well to fridge moisture - so I keep mine in mason jars that I vacuum pack with our Food Saver after every time I get beans out - this takes about 20 seconds). The M&B allows for pouring a cup before it's finished brewing, but make sure to replace the carafe within 20 seconds. I recommend against using this feature - for best flavor, the entire amount of coffee you are brewing (with any coffeemaker) needs to "mingle" together for at least a minute or two upon brewing completion - guess I'm a bit of a coffee connoisseur. M&B's instructions call for 1 scoop beans per 2 cups coffee. This is probably too weak for most of us, though not all - we are all so different in our tastes for coffee! Try using heaping scoops instead of level ones, and throw in an extra scoop for good measure if necessary (but don't fill above the arrows inside the basket). Since I have young children who could be injured by hot coffee spills (and furnishings on which I don't want coffee stains), I've gotten into the habit of drinking from an Aladdin 16-oz. thermal cup with a lid. When I start my coffee brewing, I fill the thermal cup with steaming hot water from the tap and put on the lid. This preheats the cup in preparation for the hot coffee. When the coffee's ready, pour out the water, pour in the brew, and the coffee stays hotter longer. Think about it - when you pour coffee into a room temperature cup, especially a glass or china cup, this obviously cools down the coffee to a certain extent. Most coffeemakers don't boil the water, as does a percolator (my previous coffeemaker), so where some reviewers have complaints about M&B's coffee not being hot enough, I'm thinking that would be the way it is with most coffeemakers, not just the M&B. At least you don't have to wait 10-15 minutes to drink your coffee, like you do with percolator coffee. (One thing I have wondered about with the M&B, is why Melitta permanently attached the carafe lid to the carafe - both pieces are a bit harder to clean because of that design - maybe someone else out there knows why and can clue me in - I believe there are other coffeemakers out there with the same design.) Overall, M&B is sensibly sized and priced for what it does, it is attractively designed (I especially like the flat touchpads on the control panel and think the carafe is pretty), and you can't beat the fresh coffee aroma and taste. Coffee snobs, unite! P.S.#1: Decaf rules! I'm so glad I managed the switch from regular to decaf - gradually - and I look forward to my decaf just as I did to regular. It tastes wonderful to me, yet it doesn't affect my sleep, I don't get a headache if I don't have it, etc. Still yellows my teeth, but I'll think about that at a later time. Meanwhile, I'm going to have fun with my M&B coffee toy! P.S.#2: I live quite close to a Starbucks - I'm not going there nearly so often now because of my Melitta Mill & Brew, so the reasonable price I paid for it will soon be made up in "Starbucks savings."

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Pouring itself would be the only way to make it easier!
We purchased the Mill and Brew in January 2001... and have been immensely in love with this coffeemaker since the first pot brewed. The strength can be easily adjusted by the length of time the beans are ground. The filter basket is a snap to clean, yet if you don't want to see the staining that coffee can do buy the black version. We usually just hand wash the pot and parts but once or twice a week will include them in the top shelf of the dishwasher.
But the bottom line is the wonderful fresh coffee we get to enjoy every morning... And since buying this coffeemaker I have converted to drinking the coffee black! It is that good!
The only downside is the latch on the filter cover has broken off in the last two months. The unit will not operate if the cover is open. Also the warming plate rusted early on. When I called Melitta customer service they told me that the replacement parts are no longer available since December, 2001. The cavalier attitude and suggestion that I buy a new one or place a heavy object on top of it was a bit disappointing. That is the reason for a less than perfect rating.
We still love the machine...
