Rating: - It'ne star away from lining the kitty's box
Nearly all music magazines today ... including Spin ... really are so far behind real music culture that you often wonder where the writers and editors come from. It would be great if I could go buy a music magazine and see Portishead, Smoke City, Drugstore, Ely Guerra, Julie Dexter, Koop, Llorca, Esthero, Saitn Etienne, Quasimoto, My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult, Peaches, Spoon, The Walkmen, Yesterday's Quartet, Brodsky Quartet, Sam Prekop ... etc. on the cover ... BUT alas, we generally get what a few of the reviewers previously wrote: A lot of articles that are inflated, self-referencing, star-gazing, lightweight reviews that clod and trip heavily from the world of opinion to advertising copy block. Too bad -- because there is so much good music out there. Those of us who search the Limewires, scan the Net for music info, read great sites ... and consistently talk about great music with friends seem to be more in tune than the likes of Spin. Perhaps the magazine will get better. But for now -- put it back on the rack -- ...
Rating: - Doesn't Deserve the Bashing It's Received
Spin is a great magazine. It focuses on music most other magazines don't. After reading it you feel knowledgeable in all genres of music. The articles are a joy to read and make me laugh out loud. Spin also offers other fabulous features and great reviews that are straight forward and succinct. An overall fun magazine that I look forward to receiving every month. Last month my issue got torn, tattered, and water-stained from me carrying it around with me everywhere I went. I take it everywhere in case I catch a few free minutes to read on about Steve-O from Jackass or the White Stripes, or Red Hot Chili Pepper's struggle to stay in the industry for the love of the music. Spin has really covered all the bases and never left me disappointed. A great magazine, well-worth the money.
Rating: - better in it's earlier days
I Liked SPin at first but sometime around the mid 90's through now I got bored with them.they ahve a few things I dug such as there take&asking artists too name there favorite Artists ever type of things but over time they went with the flow&just are kinda there.I don't get alot of what they have become&while I like some older issues&articles I don't pay them Mag much attention when I go magazine&book reading.
