Average Rating: Rating: - The Best of APS I shopped around at a number of photo shops and read all of the available camera reviews from numerous sources before selecting Canon's ELPH 370Z. The small size and many features make it the perfect camera for the amateur photographer. While on a recent trip to Germany the 370Z sat in my front jeans' pocket the entire trip, which assured me of never missing a shot of my friends and the beautiful scenery. And for a camera this size and ease of use it really makes itself flexible for all kinds of conditions. For example, as opposed to 35mm film, APS camera film is contained in a small cartridge which you literally drop into the camera and close the door. It's like changing a battery. There are three settings for the exposure size: 4x6, 4x7 and panoramic. And if you change your mind about the size after the pictures are developed that's no problem. A shot taken in 4x6, for example, can later be redeveloped into a panoramic. The zoom lens on the 370Z is also very handy 23 to 69mm, and APS cameras work in a 24mm format. So 69mm would give you roughly the same view of a 35mm camera with an 85mm lens. The 370Z also offers mid-roll changing, just pop the existing cartridge out and pop the new one in. The only problem I had with this camera was far away scenery shots. For anything more than 150 yards away or so, like a mountain range, the background seemed to be less defined than the same shot with a 35mm SLR (a friend of mine on the trip had a 35mm so we could compare). I don't know if that's a short-coming of the APS technology or my particular camera. But for the majority of us amateurs who take pictures mainly of friends and family this is a wonderful little camera to have. Other features include red-eye reduction, rapid shutter for fast moving shots, off center focus and a flash setting for night time shots that picks up the background lights. There isn't one camera that is right for every job. So next time I go back to Germany, I'll probably invest in a 35mm SLR with a large zoom for those scenery shots I love to take, but the 370Z will be right there with me for all the others. Rating: - Great camera for the neophyte I know next-to-nothing about photography and I was not ready to pull the trigger on a digital camera. I had been carrying a Minolta "Freedom Zoom 90" around for about 10+ years, and I was looking for a replacement that would (a) fit into my briefcase/backpack more easily, and (b) be a little bit more idiot-proof (I always seemed to have problems focusing the Minolta). After a bit of research, I choose the Canon Elph 370Z. After 6+ months of ownership, I am reporting back here as a very satisfied customer. The 370Z has met or exceeded both of my goals. It is extremely portable, allowing me to take my camera everywhere with a neglible weight penalty. And, I'm taking better photos, and it's still the same ol' me that used the old camera. My 'focus problems' have disappeared. Furthermore, I've blown a couple of the photos up to an 8"x12" scale and they retain an amazing level of crispness for such a small camera. The only drawback (noted in other reviews here) is that the unit is so compact that the flash is still too close to the lens. So remember, 'red-eye reduction' is just that: reduction, not elimination. Still, all in all, a highly recommended purchase. Rating: - Best compact, APS camera If you want a point and shoot camera that you can carry in your bag or throw in a shirt pocket so that its always available, then this may be the best camera for you. While its not deep on features, it has the ones that are most important for convenience: a decent flash, 3x zoom (better for wide angle shots than telephoto closeups), and APS film. Make no mistake, you do not get the flexibility (shutter speed, apeture, optional lenses, external flashes, white balance) that SLRs and more expensive camera can offer, but what you do get is not much bigger than a pack of cigarettes (that's not politically correct, is it?). I looked at a pretty broad set of cameras, including the other ELPH cameras, before selecting this one because I liked the zoon range and the size of the camera. I was pleasantly impressed by surprisingly good picture quality, and my wife can testify to its extreme ease of use. This ELPH is all about size, convenience, and simplicity. If that's what you want then buy it.
