Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Lack of "Catchiness"? Who cares!
I've seen many people complain that the songs on this album lack the catchiness many past Foo songs had (i.e. Everlong, Monkey Wrench, Learn To Fly). That's not a bad thing at all, though. This is a true rock album from start to finish (and what a finish it has in the most progressive Foo song to date in the wonderful "Come Back"). This is hard rock at it's finest, and as a whole, it's probably the best Foo Fighters album to date. Dave Grohl's vocals and lyrics have never been better. So while you might not be humming along to "Lonely As You" like you would with, say, "Everlong", you will be rocked.

And on a side note, I've also seen people saying this album isn't as "hard" as they were hoping for. If you're expecting bang-your-head-against-the-wall-and-shout-at-the-top-of-your-lungs hard, then okay... it's not hard. But truly listen to the previous 3 Foo albums. Is there a Big Me? Is there a type of track that's like See You, or Walking After You, or Next Year, or Ain't It the Life? No, therefore making this album the hardest Foo Fighters album to date.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - All Your Life You Will Never Find A Better CD
If anyone ever comes up to you and says that the Foo Fighters' newest album, One By One, rocks, slap them and say, "That's an understatement you heathen." To say the this cd rocks doesn't do it justice. You would think with extrordinary albums like "The Colour and The Shape" and "There is Nothing Left To Loose" that it couldn't get any better. You're thinking wrong. As soon as you pop in 1X1 you're blown out of your mind. Listening to the first song, "All My Life", is like watching the most intense suspense film you can find. The tension builds up in the verses and throws you around like a football at a 49er's game in the chorus. But it doesn't stop there. you might have to sit down to indure the intense guitar face-off in the next track "Low." But all this rocking isn't in vein. They throw in great ballads like the soothing "Tired of You" and the harmonious "Lonely as You" that takes a turn from a warm ballad to a loud screaming power tune. One of the highlights of this cd is the exit track. It starts with a Bush-esque guitar riff then takes you into a fullfledged Foo melody. Then when you think the song is over it comes back, then back again, better each time. The cd is a beautiful mix of drummer Taylor Hawkin's vibrant and vigorous drums, bassist Nate Mendel's fulfilling and tentalizing bass, guitarists Chris Shiflett and Dave Grohl's evocative and zealous guitars, that blend perfectly with Grohl's at times soothing voice and at other times his powerful screaming that doens't take it to far and doesn't let him off as a sissy screamer. One By One may be the best album of the year. In an interview drummer Hawkins said, "We're not trying to save rock 'n' roll. We're leaving that to Scott Weiland." When you don't try is when you accidently succeed in something you're not trying to do. 9.5/10 Highlights: "All My Life" "Lonely As You" "Tired of You" "Disenchanted Lullabye" "Comeback"

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Stop Over Analyzing -- It's A Great Album!
...The Foo Fighters are a great band -- fun, melodic, catchy, and most importantly -- they're just a stripped down, in your face, hard-rock jam of a band. One By One isn't much different than their previous albums, but they have matured as composers and performers. FF has gone from a fun "grungy" garage band sound (Foo Fighters, 1995) to a more polished, technically sound group. One By One stands out because Dave Grohl and the boys stand out. They slightly brush the edge of "punk" while not technically being a punk band and yet, they're distinct enough to stand out when compared to other bang-em-out rock bands of the day. Grohl's lyrics are intelligent and carry more weight to them this time around and, in One By One, the music illustrates that well. A perfect example of this (one of many) is the last track on the album. So, to those who have over analyzed this album too much (me included), just quiet down and realize that The Foo Fighters are a great band and One By One is a great album.

As far as the Foo's best work -- see There's Nothing Left To Lose.
