Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Gentle, Expressive Country-Folk Music - His Best Album
Everybody seems to love this album, so what do I have to add? Like many others, I believe that "Tumbleweed Connection" is Elton John's best album. Why? Because of the SOUND. This album sounds like nothing else Elton has ever done. It has a rich acoustic sound - acoustic guitars, acoustic piano - with a healthy dose of country and folk in the arrangements. It is this sound that makes me prefer this album in the same way that the rich acoustic sound of "Blood On The Tracks" makes that my favorite Bob Dylan album. And then there are the songs! What great songs! The album kicks off with 5 straight classics - "Ballad of a Well Known Gun", Come Down in Time", "Country Comfort", "Son of Your Father", and my favorite, "My Father's Gun", a wonderful Civil War tale written from the unique perspective of a young southern man rushing off to join the Confederate army following the death of his father at the hands of Union soldiers. Bernie Taupin at the top of his game! More great songs follow: "Love Song", "Amoreena", "Burn Down The Mission". After this album John moved away from the western sound and into more pop territory. He became a hit machine in the process, but I prefer this hit-free album.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - An Early Masterpiece By Captain Fantastic
"Tumbleweed Connection" is part of an abundance of early masterpieces by Elton John. This album has an old west concept to it, and unlike Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy, all the songs stay true to the concept.

Without a doubt, this is Elton's most acoustic album. The acoustic guitar is used frequently on all the tracks, most notably the stark "Love Song", a duet with its writer Leslie Duncan. Elton also shows how good he is with a ballad with the mysterious "Come Down In Time". Also included is one of my favorite Elton tunes, the lighthearted "Country Comfort". Rod Stewart made the song famous, but without a doubt, The definitive version was by Elton. The screeching alternate recording of "Madman Across The Water" is a dark, brooding midtempo rockder with a blazing acoustic guitar solo from Mick Ronson. Elton also gets emotional on the stark "Talking Old Soldiers" and "Where To Now, Saint Peter". Bernie Taupin's uptempo ode to Elton's goddaughter, "Amoreena", is drenched in a Southern feel with the images of a yyoung, beautiful running in the tall cornfield. "Burn Down The Mission" is classic Elton, with wild instrumental brakes, sweeping piano playing and crisp production by Gus Dudgeon, who did an excellent job remastering this work of art. Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Elton John's Best Album
Elton John called "Tumbleweed Connection" a "most perfect" album, melodically and lyrically, and who are we to argue with the artist? This is soulful music, inspired by rhythym and blues (Ray Charles comes to mind) and southern gospel. As such, the music is more "rock" than "pop" (it contains no top-40 radio hit). Elton John thus achieved a depth of feeling that he never duplicated on his other, more pop-influenced, records. Bernie Taupin's lyrics (obsessively focused on the American West) are far from perfect -- he loses a shootout or two with triteness -- but Elton John's amazing vocals save the day. Like all great rock songs, the best tracks are a perfect meld of surge and ebb: "Come Down In Time," "Amoreena," "Talking Old Soldiers," and "Madman Across The Water." Even "Love Song," not composed by John-Taupin, works as a quiet, melodic interlude. The only weakness is "Burn Down the Mission," a well-written song that is, unfortunately, saddled by some mysteriously limp vocals. All in all, though, this is an astounding achievement in rock music, one of the top albums of the 1970s.
