Average Rating: Rating: - An invigorating personal re-invention Steven Curtis Chapman is one of Christian music's most popular and best selling artists, but even the best grow stale after a while. While HEAVEN IN THE REAL WORLD was a very good CD, it lacked some of the punch and clarity of Chapman's earlier efforts. SIGNS OF LIFE was released with much ado about the 'reinvention' of Chapman's music, and it played true to the hype. "Lord of the Dance" is an opening knockout, and "Children of the Burning Heart" and "Let Us Pray" are both catchy, driving songs with outstanding hooks and great lyrics. Chapman sang the majority of the backup vocals on this CD, and the vocal layering is really intense at times, giving excellent depth to the songs on the album. There really isn't a stinker in the bunch, and Christians and non-Christians alike should be very pleased with the musical qualities of this CD, which is not always the case with contemporary Christian music. But then again, this is Steven Curtis Chapman, and dedicated fans have come to expect nothing less. Rating: - Steven Rocks! Who can say this CD is not great!!!??? I absolutely love this CD!!!! And usually you don't expect that from old CD's, not that its really THAT old! I read a review where someone said that this CD did not take them further in their Christian walk. I am here to tell you, "Ha!" Sometimes I can't even get past the first song! Steven is a wonderful singer, and so upbeat! It makes you happy to listen to him! Rating: - Not my Favorite but a good buy I was a little disapointed with this particular release from SCC. He has been my favorite performer for years but where many found this an album that retraced SCC's roots, I felt like it lacked so much lyrically. I guess I had grown used to his lyrics stirring my soul throughout an entire album, that this was a let down. One of the things that makes his albums stand out is that they are so complete. Every song is worth your time. Not so with this CD. THE LORD OF THE DANCE is a good song but it lacks any real spiritual significance. I love to sing along with it but I am not sure it leads me to a deeper relationship with God. CHILDREN OF THE BURNING HEART sounds to me like a leftover from FIRST HAND (1989) that never got laid to track. It is very dated. The title cut is also a good song but I must say again, that it lacks something lyrically that is uncharacteric of Steven. The next three songs are the real gems of the album and far and away the best on the entire CD. THE WALK provides a blues sound and a challenging message. It is truly a classic. LET US PRAY is one of those songs that the repeat button on the CD player was invented for. FREE stirs your heart and challenges complacency in your spirit. Four of the next five cuts are completely forgetable with the exception being WHAT WOULD I SAY. But Steven redeems himself with the final cut HOLD ON TO JESUS. It is simple in melody and lyric and reminds you that when Steven Curtis Chapman speaks from his heart, sometimes it feels like it is coming from your own. As I read this review it makes it seem as though I like this CD a lot less than I really do. I enjoy it and it is worth the buy for those middle three cuts. I am a die hard fan but I am willing to admit when SCC has fallen a little short.
