Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - pure pleasure
David Gray has been around for quite some time now and this, his fourth album, is as good as anything he has ever produced. Due to a series of legal wrangles with previous record companies his earlier releases are notoriously difficult to get a hold of. Now, thanks to Dave Matthews new record label "ATO Records", American fans have a chance to hear this excellent singer-songwriter. If I was pushed to come up with a musical comparison, I would have to say that David Gray is a mixture between early Bob Dylan and early Van Morrison (both lyrically and sonically) with a fresh sensibility. This particular album, in addition to brilliant new compositions such as Babylon and White Ladder, also features his brilliant acoustic reworking of the Soft Cell song Say Hello, Wave Goodbye. (The bonus tracks on this record appeared as B-Sides on his European single releases and they too are very good.) I highly recommend this to anyone who is drawn to meaningful poetic lyrics, and encourage you to seek out his earlier albums (particularly his debut A Century Ends) despite their scarcity.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Review #2 - David Gray Rules!
The melodies from this album can never stop playing in my mind! I think I'm totally attached to it though I've only been listening to it for a week. David Gray's latest release "White Ladder" has become one of the hot-buys in San Francisco Bay Area. It was actually the last copy in stock when I purchased it from Camelot Music. Here at UC Berkeley campus, students are talking about David Gray and his latest album. I have been telling all my friends about the album and they do to same to others. I think we'll start a campaign getting David Gray to tour here in SF Bay!

Like many of the reviewers have commented, I cannot take this CD away from my CD player. Every listening brings new surprises and refreshes the whole listening. David Gray is magic. I've been attached to the first two tracks "Please Forgive Me" and "Babylon". The bonus track #11 "Babylon II" has become my other favorite as David Gray allows his voice to soar and he sounds more insouciant. Incredible! Track #8 "This Years Love" combines folk, electronic with soft ballad and is one of the most soothing piece in the album. A friend of mine heard Track #9 "Sail Away" on a local radio when commuting to school and is so determined to get the CD as soon as he got off from classes.

The San Francisco-based apparel GAP stores have been playing Track #3 My Oh My and have becomes local favorites. David Gray's music is magic. It stirs up commotion and sparkles and triggers a shopping spree here in San Francisco. You've got to listen to it for yourself. It could be one of the best album you'll listen.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Poetic Lyrics and Well Written Music
I bought this album almost a year ago, but not until now have I felt compelled to write a review.

I was hooked after the first time I listened to this album! So much so that I immediately went out and started to build my David Gray collection with his earlier works and therefore cementing my position as one huge David Gray fan! After seeing him live at Radio City Music Hall, I knew there was no going back.

White Ladder is a slight departure from his first three albums (a little more electronic sounding in some places), but the core of David Gray is very apparent: his gripping lyrics that are so simple and honest they're almost poetic, and terrific guitar melodies. BABYLON was always the runaway hit, but I was so taken with PLEASE FORGIVE ME..."for I know not what I do. Feels like lightning running through my veins everytime I look at you."

WE'RE NOT RIGHT is a very powerful song about alcoholism..."Come in here where normal rules do not apply. Can't tell the bottle from the mountain top, no, we're not right." And of course BABYLON just makes you want to go bounding down the street with a happy little spring in your step.

I really don't know what else to say, other than buy this album. It's terrific.

I absolutely love David Gray's music. He is incredibly talented and look forward to more albums and tours!

PS: Some other David Gray tunes to check out: THE LIGHT, NEW HORIZONS, WISOM, 4AM, and EVERYTIME.
