Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - The Songwriter
Every so often, there is a truly definitive songwriter. A person so worthy of there talents, that everybody can really say thanks for those ballads and memories. Lionel Richie, is a perfect example to that status. Since his days with The Commodores, he has crafted some of the most beautiful songs of our generation. Nevertheless, with every Greatest Hits Record that comes out, there is always a lack of focus within a record, especially one that should show stronger sides and a better sense of grace.

Motown's 2003 Definitive Collection, is a retrospective of Lionel's highlights as a solo act, and with The Commodores. The album is mostly similar to his previous Greatest Hits collection, Back To Front. Although this collection tries to build some more goodies to the link. The album also features two new recordings, as well as his most recent hit song Angel. Also, there are other truly hits on this collection, like Say You Say Me, Hello, Running With The Night, and All Night Long. The album also includes some of his hit Commodores classics like, Still, Three Times A Lady, and Just To Be Close To You.

Unfortunately, the album lacks any dedication from Lionel Richie's Mercury recordings, Time, and Louder Than Words. Still, for those Motown fans, this is truly a must have retrospective of one of our greatest songwriters in music history, and beyond.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A great music collection for a pop legend
Words cannot express how wonderful this music collection is. Combining great hits from the Commodores like "Three Times A Lady" and "Sail On", Lionel Richie provides his fans the passion, heart, and soul of his music in The Definitive Collection. Also included with the album are two new tracks not heard in any of his other albums: "Goodbye" and "To Love A Woman (featuring Enrique Iglesias)". And if you buy this now, you will receive a bonus CD that contains four unreleased songs and a hidden track; this is only for a limited time. This CD should not be missed for any Lionel Richie fan. You will not be disappointed.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Definitely most "Definitive" Lionel Richie Collection
This is the best Lionel Richie collection available to date. The Definitive Collection consists of 25 tracks (5 song bonus disc included): 8 songs from the Commodores and 17 by Lionel Richie. The previous hits collection, 1992's single disc "Back to Front" is completely covered here, minus "My Destiny" and "Love, Oh Love". Also the 1997 compilation, "Love Songs", is all here except for "Love will conquer all" and the Commodores hit "Sweet Love". Its hard to quibble with the exclusion of "Sweet Love" and most anything by the Commodores considering the several extensive anthologies and hits albums available by that group. The problem is the Commodores' love songs sang by Richie are considered by many as Lionel Richie songs, hence the reason the biggest ones are in this collection. The collection is not chronological, starting off with Richie's "Hello" from '83 followed by the Commodores' "Just to be close to you" circa '76, but it still works because the theme and mood of the songs are similar. Two new songs finish off the main disc: "To love a woman" (with Enrique Iglesias) and "Goodbye". The 5 track bonus disc includes three more from the Commodores: an unreleased alternate mix of "Zoom","Oh No", and a hidden track #5 - a classic from the Commodores (can you guess what it is?) and two more from Richie: early working version of "Can't Slow Down" and "Lady", which many people probably think Kenny Rogers wrote. The Definitive Collection should please any fan, casual or not, and its the best way to get all the essential Lionel Richie tracks in a single reasonably priced CD.

Warning: Track 15 may actually make you want to try to dance on your ceiling, but I wouldn't advise it. It didn't work either time I tried it. I got hurt.
