Average Rating: Rating: - The best album from the best band on the planet. When Pearl Jam first came out in the early 90s, I didn't even think that I liked them. Evenflow was their first release and I thought it was just a ripoff of Soundgarden's "Hands all over". They were just a Soundgarden ripoff that's all. Until one day a friend who loved PJ let me borrow a live bootleg (Atlanta 93). I was totally blown away!!! I went out and got Ten and have been converted into THE biggest PJ fan. (Except for all of you of course, hehe.) If you buy just one Pj cd, buy Ten. They are all awesome, but Ten is what started the whole phenomenon. Many singers today try to be Ed but they don't even come close. If you get a chance go see PJ live. They are the best live band on the planet!! If you don't believe me then you obviously haven't seen them live. Live on Two Legs just doesn't cut it. And stop comparing them to Nirvana. They are totally different styles of music. I love Nirvana too, but comparing these two bands isn't fair to Pearl Jam or Nirvana. It isn't a fricken competition, just two awesome bands putting out music that they love and so do we. Can't wait for their next album. See Ya!! Rating: - The World Meet Pearl Jam, Pearl Jam The World Whether people like it or not grunge died with Kurt Kobain as did Nirvana, Bands like Nirvana & Pearl Jam were solely responsible for the rise of grunge in the early 90's with albums like 'Nevermind' and 'Ten'. Upon 'Ten's' release it is no secret that it did not sell as well as most top line music, but with the release of 'Nevermind' Pearl Jams album 'Ten' (and Nevermind) skyrocketed both bands to fame. And by doing so made the respective front men 'Eddie Vedder' and Kurt Kobain gods. However unlike Nirvana's 'Nevermind' album (which 'Ten' went on to out sell) 'Ten' make a fantastic change from traditional rock music, in all senses 'Ten' is a musical milestone. Whether it be the beautiful love/tragedy song 'Black' or the bands most recognised song 'Jeremy' a true 90's classic, the fact that this album was never intended to be as successful as it was, is it's genius. Somehow each track keeps itself fresh without ever sounding like something before it, and 10 years on it still sounds every bit as fresh and makes rival bands such as 'STP' seem dismal and boring in comparison. Do your self a favour and by this album, you will not regret it, If your an existing/long-time Pearl Jam fans and don't have this album then I suggest that you go out and buy it now. Newbies will love it as well, as long as you like either rock music or grunge then you will love and 'need' Pearl Jam's 'Ten'. Rating: - forget the "grunge" label and just enjoy OK, so Eddie Vedder wore flannel too. Who cares? This doesn't sound much like Nirvana, but that's not a reason to castigate it. It's actually a great straight-up rock n' roll album with a few stellar moments. The first half far outshines the second half. Black is one of the most beautiful rock ballads of all time, and I've heard the Kinks' Waterloo Sunset and just about every note the Beatles ever wrote. Alive is genuinely anthemic and one of those songs that will always recall a time and place. I can't listen to it without feeling like I'm 15 again. The formula falters a bit on the last few songs. Oceans sounds like a bad imitation of Zeppelin and Garden and Deep are decent but fail to live up to the quality of the singles. Most Pearl Jam albums are like this - a few stellar cuts and a lot of pretty good, 70's-style rock. They're not "alternative" except perhaps in attitude and ideology, so forget the mythology and just appreciate the songs.
