Rating: - Heaven sent - down from the mountain!
While here has to be a hint of crass commercialism in the decision to release this CD given the success of the "O Brother" soundtrack the end result is still a boon for the listener and a continuation of the celebration of a very important musical style. This CD is a great adjunct to the soundtrack CD and introduces some new songs as well as different versions of songs found on the soundtrack CD. Songs like "Wild Bill Jones" and "I want to sing that Rock and Roll" capture the listener's attention with their strong melodies and crafted lyrics. Chris Thomas King's version of "John Law burned down the liquor sto'" highlights his blues talents and adds a needed depth to the selection of songs offered on this CD. For longtime fans there is much here that they will enjoy. To the neophyte listener who has just discovered this style of music through these CD's, this set of live recordings (with introductions by Holly Hunter) will further entrance them into a world of noble, yet simple popular music. This CD is well worth buying and T Bone Burnett (and by extension the Coen brothers) should be congratulated for his heavy promotion of one of America's finest traditions - mountain music.
Rating: - Lighten Up On The Sequel...
So what if they jumped on the bandwagon. "Down From The Mountain" is one of the two best live traditional albums with various artists I've heard since the mid-sixties Newport Folk Festival series. ( My other favorite is "Til We Outnumber Em" ) It's more lively than the soundtrack which is self explanitory and honestly just as good. I like all the performances with the ladies ( Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss, Cox Family and Gillian Welch ) getting more of the spotlight on the live take. It's nice to hear Harris going back to her traditional roots on "Green Pastures", leaving the "Spyboy" version back at the train station. My only minor disappointment is you hear the crowd clapping on some of the songs while the music is being played which is outdated for modern recording. So we've had a great soundtrack, live album & DVD/Video. What's left? The rumor is the show is going on the road which will be the best thing in music since "The Texas Campfire Tapes".
Rating: - The music does the talking.
This is not a flashy concert, but it is good music. It gives a backstage, insight into the entertainers, and makes us feel we are right there with them. But, the music is the best. Crystal clear, tight harmony of Allison Krause, Gillian Welch, and Emmylou Harris, and tighter harmony of Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, are memorable standouts. Allison Krause brings a special quality to everything she sings. Other favorites are the Cox Family singing two songs, and the late John Hartford singing Big Rock Candy Mountain. If you enjoy live performances, and true soulful music performed superbly, this video and also the CD should be added to your collection.
