Average Rating: Rating: - I tried... I really tried to like this CD. I loved Yeston's Nine. But Titanic is nowhere near as good as that show. It does have some wonderful music, but it also has a lot of tedious music. Often they musicalized the wrong things. For example, this was a musical crying out for a big emotional closing number after the actual sinking of the ship, but we don't get it--we get that stupid Epilogue, inappropriately reprising "In Every Age" with no irony whatsoever when circumstances have just shown that such technological achievement can be dangerous. The lyrics are really bad. Lots of shopping lists (literally) and exposition--as someone pointed out, many of these lines should not have been sung. And I did see the show when it toured through Denver, and yes, there is zero character development, plenty of cliche, and way too many characters. The only real emotion I felt during the show was during the Straus's duet "Still," and that's because I projected their plight onto my parents. (And the touring singers sounded a lot better than the ones on the CD, too.) By no means a disaster, but very disappointing. Rating: - Best Musical of ALL TIME! Okay, I saw the musical 'Titanic' when it came to my city in 1999, and I enjoyed it so much. I actualy saw it because I liked the Titanic movie, and I was wondering what the musical was like, and I must say, I liked the musical a LOT better than the movie. There are 3 key characters in the musical, and they are Frederick Barrett, Alice Beane, and Kate McGowen. We mainly focus on them. When I saw the musical, I cried. I cried a LOT! It was so heart-warming. The story and the music was so powerful. There have been a lot of reviews here where people have given it one star, but they did that because they didn't pay attention to the musical. It's hard to understand unless you really tune into it. I got this CD a few years after the performance, and when I first listened to it I cried, because the lyrics and music was so wonderful. The story is about all of these people who boarded the Titanic with hopes and dreams...the third class, hoping to find a better life...the second class, wanting nothing more than to be with the first class...and the first class, who are proud to be living in the age that they are living in, with all the new wonders coming into the world. That is what Titanic is about, so maybe after reading this review, you'll change your mind, and see this spectacular musical, that won 5 Tony Awards, including best musical. Rating: - Wonderful and triumphant! I sat down after borrowing this album from a good friend who recommended it and immediately went out to purchase it the next day. I didn't want to wait for my own copy - it was THAT good! Although so many adore Maury Yeston's NINE, I found TITANIC to hold so much better promise than NINE and be so much better and enjoyable in comparison. The songs all catch the time period, with the changes in the world approaching and so much more... I recommend this to Sondheim lovers, especially fans of his COMPANY. It was the first soundtrack that came to mind when listening to this wonderful and brilliant show.
