Rating: - Not the Best "Best Of"
"Incomplete" is the word that comes to my mind when I look at the tracklisting for "The Best of 1990-2000," U2's retrospective of the band's second decade of music. First off, "Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of" was not released until 2001, so trade that track for "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses," and the compilation seems better already. The songs representing Achtung Baby are strong ones, though an argument in favor of "The Fly" being included can be made. "Hold Me..." was a great track to put on the CD because it was overshadowed by Seal's big hit from the Batman Forever Soundtrack. The middle two albums of the 90's, Zooropa and Pop, did produce some hits, though "If God Will Send His Angels" is the only song I can recall at my young age. I found a quote that said the Edge did not want the compilation to be weighted toward All That You Can't Leave Behind, so only two songs were included. "Beautiful Day" would have been just fine on its own, and save the other three hits for the Best of 2000-2010. In my opinion, if you want a true taste of U2 in the 90's, I recommend listening to the individual albums.
Rating: - A pretty good compilation for one of my least favorite bands
I'm not exactly a fan of U2 or their recent music in the past decade but I found this compilation in the used cd bins one day. I was intending to give it to my brother and his wife for Christmas but after listening to the cd, I think I might have to keep it. The band's music from "Achtung Baby" up to their last studio album isn't as bad as I originally thought. I still don't care for songs like "Discotheque", "Beautiful Day", and "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me". Those songs never did anything for me still there are a lot worse songs out there nowadays. The songs I do like are: "One", "Stuck in a Moment That You Can't Get Out of", "The First Time", "Miss Sarajevo", "Electrical Storm", and "Mysterious Ways". I was surprised that "Walk On" wasn't included on this best of compilation. Although I do enjoy this cd immensely, I am still not convinced that the band lives up to the hype that surrounds them. I know I am going to draw the ire of diehard U2 fans but the greatest rock band they are not, that title goes to KMFDM in my opinion. "The Best of 1990-2000" is better than I thought and it has dampened my criticism that I have always felt for the band. If anything, this cd is a good compilation for casual U2 listeners.
Rating: - U2 attempts to re-write history here - ashamed prehaps?
Let's get this straight. This CD in no way represents the best of U2 in the 90's. . Okay let's get into it. The CD's first misstep is the inclusion of a sub-par mix of Mysterious Ways were Bono mumbles the worlds at a key point in the song. Somebody must have grabbed the wrong master or something. Anway, bad omen. The inclusion of the Electrical Storm is ok. It just isn't a "best of" single exactly, so probably not the best move on their part. Then comes the first re-mix. The new version of Gone is just well, fantastic. This should have been released as the new single, just as the Sweetest Thing was remixed for the 80's best of. Moving on., the Hands That Built America just seems out of place. The actual movie mix of this track is much better, but even so. Not really worth buying the disc for. Discotheque is the first obvious reworking of history. The moment that made this song worth it's silliness was yanked in the remix (the boom-ya after the bridge). Now the song falls flat on it's face. I think the band was a bit embarrassed about it's excesses in the 90's and is trying to pretend they didn't happen. I wish this remix didn't happen. The new mix of Staring At The Sun is ok, but this was another week single to begin with. The new mix of Numb is just as bad as the old mix. This song was never very strong and it amazes me it was ever released in the first place. Okay, what's missing. The Fly and Wild Horses were both very strong singles that didn't make it. The Fly actually made the UK version of this CD for some reason. The title track to Zooropa is missing. While not the strongest single, it compares really well to Numb. From Pop I can't believe they left off the best track on the whole disc, Please. But let's not forget the worst omission, The Ground Beneath Her Feet from the Million Dollar Hotel soundtrack. This is one of their best songs ever. How did songs like Staring at the Sun replace it? Beats me. Looking back over the 90's it's truly amazing how lackluster the decade really was for U2 in comparison to the 80's. Not that I mind, I really enjoyed their experimentation. I am sort of upset that they returned so obviously to their original sound lately.
