Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Still going strong
One is forgiven for presupposing this score and this album can only be bad: Satch's supremely tiresome hit single, which came out before the opening; the long gestation; the uncredited collaborators (Strouse and Adams, Bob Merrill); the fact that it's based on Thornton Wilder, who's done to death by eggheads; and, of course, Carol Channing herself, that living tribute to cryonics. And, let's face it, Jerry Herman. Unfortunately, it's a good score. People who think the guy's all bombast should listen to his ballads. Even those who harp on his "weakness" for big numbers must confess they're effective big numbers. Jerry Herman's one of those reasons people believe, if it's popular, it can't be good -- a tremendous disservice to a fine songwriter.

As a recording it's good too (although the title tune inexplicably opens in mono and crossfades into stereo). Where Columbia and Goddard Lieberson recreated the theatrical experience, RCA rendered its cast albums like pop albums. Nothing favors either approach: Victor issued some classics in the sixties. The Victor approach works here.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - still a glittering and gorgeous score
HELLO DOLLY remains oner of those pinnacles in the Broadway musical theatre where you ask yourself: "Does it get any better than this?....Probably not!".

This is still regarded as the BEST recording of the score; the original Broadway cast headed by the best-ever Dolly Gallagher Levi - CAROL CHANNING.

She is supported by a dreamlike ensemble; headed by Charles Nelson Reilly as Cornelius, David Burns as Horace Vandergelder, Eileen Brennan as Irene Molloy and Sondra Lee (the original Tiger Lily in PETER PAN) as Minnie.

Recorded on the Sunday after the opening (as was the custom back then), the cast is still incredibly-fresh and obviously still reeling from the euphoria that caught them at the premiere. Stand-out numbers include "I Put My Hand In", "Ribbons Down My Back", "Elegance", "Put on Your Sunday Clothes", "So Long Dearie" (one of the great 11 o'clock numbers) and the showstopping title song (you can just picture Carol coming down that Harmonia Gardens staircase in that scarlet ballgown).

Carol Channing later returned to the character she had made famous in two different Broadway revivals; in 1978 and most recently in the sell-out 1994 production which subsquently toured regionally.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The heart of Over-the-Top NY Broadway!
This is theatre history. Carol Channing--the wannabe diva who sings (well, she doesn't sing) in her own little world with so much personality and vitality and awe-inspiring comfort on the stage and on the microphone--IS Dolly Levi, whether you want to argue that she wasn't really the first nor the second to be considered. All of the pre-history is not history, as far as I am concerned: because this is Broadway history. And I don't care what you say about --this is the show that won the most Tonys! It was up against so much competition and yet came out glittering. Aside from all of that, Charles Nelson Reilly is just plain great! Although he is so annoying ("Look at my glasses, errahhh!"), he has a fantastic singing voice that really reaches its pinnacle in "Hello, Dolly!" I was actually forced--and I mean forced--to perform in this show as Vandergelder, and hated every minute of it. It was a painful experience for me until I realized that this show, even though it can be done badly, is so much fun. And the fun that is in between the bars of music and the corny script really comes out on this album. It is the original. Forget about Barbra "Like Butta" Streisand! She can "snuggle up to her caaaash REgistar!" Go [original] Dolly!
