Average Rating: Rating: - Smahing Everything great about the first album (The Hour of the Bewilderbeast) minus the commercials (Body Rap, This Song). Beatlesque in his originality, Badly Drawn Boy hits us again. Right in the face, again. The title track is amazing and "You Were Right" is an absolute masterpiece. The album is classic. Rating: - Hour of Bewilderbeast Loyalists beware! Unlike many of the BDB Hour of the Bewilderbeast fans, I absolutely loved the "About a Boy" soundtrack. It was one of those pop perfect albums that had me reaching for my guitar (which is really the highest praise any pop album could draw from me). "Have you fed the fish" will likely capitalize on the larger audience that "About a Boy" ensnared. (As a sidenote, I listened quite religiously to the "About a Boy" album before having seen the film, which was excellent in its own right. But did anyone else notice how badly the music was used in the film? It was as if it was rushed in the post-production process...) Having said that, "Have you fed the fish" takes a more drastic turn towards the pop, and frankly, it stinks. Sure, I read alot of the negative reviews prior to purchasing the album, but I turned a blind eye towards them, counting them off as BDB purists who decried "About a Boy"'s turn towards the "accessible". Boy was I wrong, alot of the acoustic grace and understatement is lost here, as we instead wallow in the star-struck kiddie pool of marriage and fatherhood. Let's just hope that "Have you fed the fish" is just a temporary pit-stop for BDB, and not some Elton John inferno that hath no remedy. Rating: - As great and catchy as any BDB cd "The Hour of Bewilderbeast" and the soundtrack to "About a Boy" got me hooked on Badly Drawn Boy, and "Have You Fed The Fish?" is keeping me hooked. My 3 disk cd changer in my room is completely taken over by Badly Dwarn Boy cds, and I can't get enough. I just got the cd today, the day it came out, and I am already working on memorizing the songs. The lyrics are intelligent and humerous. The sound of "Fish" is a lot poppier than "Bewilderbeast" and resembles "About a Boy", yet it retains its own identity, and is in itself amazing. As long as there are singers like Badly Drawn Boy in the world, music will still be worth listening to. I can't however recommend it over any of his other works since they are all simply amazing, but if you are new to Badly Drawn Boy, this is a nice starting point.
