Rating: - A fitting tribute to a mad genius...
Wish You Were Here is not in anyway a "Roger Waters Rant" piece. It is rather a fitting, if sad rememberance of their founder Syd Barrett who suffered a mental breakdown under the pressures of rock stardom and enormous LSD consumption. In fact, the album's core track Shine On you Crazy Diamond contains little if any lyrics, but the lyrics that are contained are perhaps some of their most poignant ("Now there's a look in your eyes, like big black holes in the sky..."). Barrett had by this time become a recluse living in England with his Mother. The track Wish You Were Here represents Gilmour, Waters, Wright, and Mason longing for the companionship and spark that the sheer genius of Barrett provided the Floyd. Welcome to the Machine is one of Floyd's most overlooked tracks, a simple understated, haunting masterpiece steeped in Wright's magnificent keyboard effects. Have a Cigar is a strong track anchored by Water's great bass work. Overall, a very strong Floyd album which draws its inspiration from the corroded mind of a genius.
Rating: - Serious Music
This album, along with the other Pink Floyd albums, can best be described as "Serious", and "Real". This is no pop music by any means, and they never have the sound which is prominent for the time period that the albums are released. In other words, this is some very, very good stuff. In all aspects, from the musical soundscapes to the lyrical brilliance, each album will move you emotionally like no other group that I can think of. Only Lennon and McCartney of the Beatles could match this, although their style was much different. The album Wish You Were Here, even after all these years, is the most moving album that I have ever heard. Listen to the first four parts of Shine On You Crazy Diamond very carefully, there is a LOT going on. The synths combined with the blues guitar from Gilmour are absolutely incredible! If you skip the other songs, and listen to the whole piece, parts I-IX, all together, you will notice the similarity to "Echoes", in the structure of it. It is absolutely beautiful, no matter what the more impatient reviewers may state about it. Epic Pink Floyd has always been my favorite. Wrights piano flourishes thoughout all their albums, although simple, add something special which can't be ignored. The much shorter acoustic numbers from Waters are just as incredible and moving, and I also love those as well. Songs like Wish You Were Here, Mother, etc., are amazing and beautiful. You really can't have one without the other, and Waters and Gilmour together, with their opposing ideas, made the albums great in my opinion.
Rating: - This is the Real Thing in Music
This album, Wish You Were Here, is without a doubt the best album that I have ever listened too. There are a lot of good albums out there from other artists, but most of them have only a few good tracks. This one is ALL good tracks. Which brings me to a certain point; I have been listening to rock and roll for almost thirty years now, and it's VERY PLAIN to see that MANY of the new rock groups out there today are copying certain ideas/chords/progressions/tempos/effects/tempos from various Pink Floyd albums. This is a fact, and if you listen to enough rock music, you will notice it plainly. This proves the lack of creativity in a lot of today's rock music. It is so incredibly clear to see in some cases, that it is pathetic! Well, I guess I can't blame 'em really, after all, they are taking ideas from the greatest rock group to ever exist. Anyway, note the secret to Pink Floyd's highly moving sound; "floating" notes, both synth, organ, and guitar (thanks to Gilmour and Wright), beautiful chord progressions, simple yet hyptnotic rhythms, avant garde style sound effects (which add a whole extra dimension to the music), a slow to medium tempo in ALL cases (which acts to calm the nerves), and incredibly moving lyrics from Waters (which get you to thinking). I have heard great music with stupid lyrics, great lyrics with stupid music, but with Pink Floyd you get GREAT music AND GREAT lyrics!!! Shine On
