Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A rare masterpiece
When I first bought this album, I confess I expected to find the sort of nice, easy listening, simple and effective melodies and lyrics I'm used to get from artists as Enya. Now I'm glad I made that mistake, because I found not only the joy of discovering an incredibly rich and powerful music universe, but I also felt like I was unveiling a whole hidden world of forgotten legend and lore. The title of this album is pretty accurate: have you ever wondered what it would feel like to discover an extremely old book full of forsaken knowledge in a medieval library? Well, by hearing this record you'll get as close as you can probably ever be to that feeling...

Perhaps what I enjoyed the most about "Book of secrets" is the fact that it was able to give me the feeling I was hearing echoes of ancient times, coming not just from western Europe but also from eastern faraway civilizations, places that hold within themselves a vast mysticism and wonderful history.

Now! if you're looking for the kind of album you can just put on your CD player and press "play", and let the music flow while you're doing something else, stay away from this. But if you can accept the challenge of hearing something that cannot be easily labeled, and that goes far beyond today's simplistic concepts, you won't regret to buy Loreena's "Book of secrets".

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - This album will speak to your soul...
Loreena McKennitt is one of my favorite artists. "The Book of Secrets" is a wonderful variety of sounds from the haunting strains of "Prologue" to the irresistibly rhythmic "Marco Polo." All of the tracks are well-constructed musically, and the Middle Eastern influence gives her Celtic-inspired music a special flair. I particularly enjoyed "The Mummers' Dance" and the heartbreaking story of the wandering monk set to the soul-deep music of "Skellig." "Dante's Prayer" is such a beautiful piece; the first time I heard it, it moved me to tears.

If you are trying to decide whether or not you want to add this CD to your collection, let me say in no uncertain terms that you should do so immediately. You will not be sorry. It is a brilliant effort by McKennitt, worth every penny and then some.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Full of depth and style
This is McKennitt's newest album, and possibly one of her best. Unlike some of her earlier albums that tend to be all one tempo, there is a well-balanced blend of fast and slow songs, each beautiful in a unique way. While others commented that her diction tends to be poor, this is not always the case, and her voice is one of the most pure and tone-filled I've ever heard. While "Mummer's Dance" tends to be the most talked-about song on this album, my personal favorites also include "Dante's Prayer" (which is even more moving if you're familiar with The Divine Comedy) and "The Highwayman," a beautiful interpretation of Noyes' famous poem. While her songs may tend to be rather long for some, I find they are the perfect length to really get into the music. This and her last album, The Mask and the Mirror, show McKennitt's musical expansion, particularly with the use of percussion and different tempos. Her notes in the cd booklet explain her inspirations and sources for her songs; if possible, read these as well to get a better understanding of the historical backgrounds of her songs. Though others have tried to imitate McKennitt's style, I've never found anyone who can quite match up to her unique music (and believe me, I've looked.) If you've never heard McKennitt before, this is the perfect album with which to start.
