Average Rating: 4.24 out of 5 stars

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - An unforeseen (?) change...
First of all I'm making clear that i give this album only 3 stars being fully aware that it's one of those albums that you cant objectively rate..Someone else might give 5 stars and it would be perfectly reasonable.
The fact that Beck appears with a different, melancholic persona in "Sea change" isn't really all that surprising.
Beck fans know very well that almost all of Beck's LPs have been very diverse and quite different from each other.
Now, when it comes to this, to me at least, it was a pleasant surprise. Beck proves that he can deliver a "downer" the way it should be delivered. There's tons of melancholy and sadness here, and Beck gives some beautiful performances, as he goes through a streak of heavily emotional ballads.
"Lost cause" the 5th track is a tremendous song as is the very first one "Golden age"...
And while anyone being in the same mood as the famous sample-trickster will be very well served here, others might see it differently.
I personally liked the album a lot, but, as i was listening to it i thought it started "dragging" towards the last songs, the last 3-4 tracks started "dissapearing" music-wise as they had not much musical inspiration.
Yes the lyrics are for the most part ranging from great to decent but the mood is repetitive and this hurts the album.
"Sea change" will please the Beck loyal...Others, who might be only discovering Beck now, might find this boring.
And interestingly, noone might be wrong..

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Shifting Tides
Beck is an artist who is in the vein of David Bowie, a musical chameleon who is constantly shifting musical styles from album to album. On his previous effort, Midnite Vultures, Beck assumed the roll of funkmeister with a sexy, r&b lathered affair. He does a 180-degree turn for Sea Change as he turns into a heartbroken troubadour. The album is the most personal and confessional work he has recorded as the focus is on the breakup of his long time relationship. The music is acoustic based, but heavily orchestrated (the strings were arranged by Beck's father). The opening track, "The Golden Age", is the album's best and a stunning work. Beck's vocals are laconic, almost sleepy and the song has a powerful imagery. "Sunday Sun" has a Beatlesque psychedelic vibe with droning sitars. "Guess I'm Doing Fine" is a powerful lament and "Paper Tiger" has an epic quality. The acoustic stylings of Sea Change aren't new to Beck as he has gone this route before on Mutations and One Foot In The Grave, but neither of those albums can come close to matching Sea Change's power and pure artistry.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Beck is absolutely stunning
While not anywhere near as varied as say, any of Beck's other releases, this picks a unified sound or theme and basically sticks with it. The results are absolutely jaw-dropping. Vocally, Beck can hold his own much better than his 'Mellow Gold' or 'Odelay' days, his natural singing voice is very calm and mellowing, he should've used it more. Musically, this is also Beck's finest hour, trading in samples and big beats for washed-over synths and strings and the ever-present acoustic guitar.

'Guess I'm Doing Fine' is almost like country given the electronic touch in the studio, while 'Paper Tiger' is like 21st century psychedelia including a freaky string section and an even trippier guitar solo. 'Lonesome Tears' is an exercise in gloom, given the complete orchestral treatment, sounding like a creepy Pink Floyd at times. 'Round The Bend' is the quietest number on the album, and arguably the most musically stunning, again with the strings, but in a more calming fashion. Beck may be "bummed," but being bummed never sounded so nice. Beck has put out one of the best albums of the year, and definitely the most consistent album of his career, maybe even his best.
