Average Rating: Rating: - Sorry Brits, But Your Voices Are the Pits I recently saw the Broadway performance of "Mamma Mia," and it was an incredible show. The songs are all recognizable ABBA, and the great encore tunes of "Dancing Queen," "Mamma Mia," and "Waterloo" have everyone dancing, clapping and swaying in the aisles. Sadly, this CD is a recording of the London cast, and the voices are weak. The compilation lacks the incredible energy of the Broadway performance, and the CD's biggest void is the incredible voice of lead Broadway performer Louise Pitre (as Donna). The CD also does not offer the three encore tunes. If you have attended the Broadway performace, you'll probably be disappointed in this CD. I hope a record label soon will record the incredible, current Broadway cast. In the interim, this CD makes a great coaster! Rating: - Thank you for the music ABBA!!!! I love this cd, and i didn't even know who Abba was up until i bought it. These songs are truly classics and will never go out of style. The best songs are: Mamma Mia, Dancing Queen, Super Trouper, Under Attack, and Take a Chance on Me. The sound quality is far superior to Abba's origonal covers of these songs, and the orchestrations are brighter and more updated. I have not seen the show, but is sounds as if abba's songs work suprisingly well to tell a story. If you love ABBA, you should definately buy this cd. If you don't know who ABBA is, buy it. And if you hate ABBA, you probably shouldn't even be reading this review. Enjoy!!! Rating: - Take a couple dozen ABBA songs, add narrative, mix well... First, I have absolutely no problem with the idea of a musical based on the songs of ABBA, having one thought of doing something similar with the songs of Stevie Nicks. Besides, the one "real" musical Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus wrote with Tim Rice, "Chess," is one of my favorites. Second, I have no problem with the songs being sung by singers other than ABBA in slightly different ways. One of the fun things about the Broadway version of "Tommy" was the way songs were presented with hitherto undiscovered harmonies and the like. Now, I have not seen the show (up here in the Northland? Are you joking?), so I cannot complain about what has been left out from the show, but I do have one major complaint. Here we have this musical that is based on songs that people are humming BEFORE they walk into the theater. So when you open up the little booklet that comes along with "Mamma Mia!" you get the lyrics to all of these songs, but NOT a synopsis of the plot. The back of the CD tells you who sings which song, and given the cover there is apparently a wedding, probably during the song "I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do," which is sung by Sam and Donna along with the Company. So maybe Sam and Donna are the ones getting married and maybe that is even Donna pictured on the cover, but I have no way of knowing for sure. As to who Sophie is and why she is wishing Sam, Bill and Harry good luck, I do not know either. There are some dialogue excerpts scattered throughout the piece that plug in some of the holes, but would a paragraph or two have hurt here? Listening to "Mamma Mia!" is still a lot of fun and most of us will be too busy singing along to worry about narrative completeness.
