Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The most organic techno album ever
I repeat: this is techno at it's most "live" and organic. For proof, just listen to the opener, "Honey". The turntable scratch is the only thing that doesn't sound like it was recorded live. Dance music has been lacking in the "live sound" department for quite some time, and this was a great idea: blues and gospel vocals added to modern electronic beats.

Of course, that wouldn't mean jack if the album didn't have good songs on it, and it undoubtedly does. "Honey" and "Natural Blues" are great examples of this concept, but the real winner is "Run On", an incredibly catchy song that could be the album's highlight. "Porcelain", "Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?", and "My Weakness" are just some of my favorite slower songs here. "Machete" is an Underworld-esque track that is a lot better than it sounds on paper, and "Bodyrock" is the last great big beat song.

All in all, this is probably Moby's finest hour, and a great achievement for the world of dance music. It seems to appeal to those outside the techno world, too, making this a rare crossover. Appreciate it now or be left behind.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Techno meets gospel, and it actually works
I've never been a Moby fan, and I was really reluctant to buy this album. I had bought Everything Is Wrong, mostly because I liked the album title, and even though it was pretty great in some ways, the schizophrenia of it put me off quite a bit. So I was pretty surprized at how thoroughly coherent Play is, especially when it contains songs as seemingly incompatable as Bodyrock (which sounds very Fatboy-Slim influenced) and Porcelin, the complete opposite. But it all works, somehow, combining sampled Gospel vocals and electronica to create a whole new musical genre.

Doesn't Moby come up with some great song titles? Check 'em out. Another plus is how even though he's a very devout Christian and vegan, he doesn't feel the need to preach about it in his music. Instead, he puts essays of his into the liner notes, and even though I don't agree with his politics, he makes some very valid points in his essays that I definately respect.

"Find My Baby" is probably my favorite song on here, although they're all good. Some are really techno-y, but still original enough to escape the facelessness that plagues a lot of electronic music. I think for this album Moby was really influenced by the Fatboy Slim/Chemical Brothers strategy of gradually building up songs by slowly piling on more and more instruments. He took what they had already done, added some gospel samples, and took it to the max. Also, unlike the Chemical Brothers for example, Moby has clearly spent a lot of time analyzing his song structures and making sure they never go on so long that they turn into a bunch of hammering, repetitive noise. A lot of these songs start out very basic, maybe just a lone vocal or keyboard part, but once enough relatively simple instrument parts start piling up upon each other, the songs just gain this sense of epicness. Great stuff.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Moby¿s best album to date
After the hardcore industrial sound of Animal Rights and cinematic scope of I Like To Score, Moby has finally delivered the album we all knew he could make. Making many critics 'Best Album of 1999' it is easy to see why - the diversity and musical styles are astounding. From the distinctive opener Honey through to My Weakness Moby rarely puts a foot wrong. Many fans will prefer certain tracks to others depending on their musical tastes which makes the album even more essential. Machete and Bodyrock are the two high-tempo numbers that will draw the mainstream crowd in. Personally I prefer the first half of Play as it contain the most memorable and genius-like tracks, notably Porcelain and Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad? In sequence, from Down Slow to Guitar flute & string (this track is quite literally self-explanatory) the album contains the majority of the 'instrumental' songs which tend to drag the album's tempo. Though these more ambient tracks are still brilliant, nothing can compare to the last two tracks The Sky Is Broken and My Weakness, sounding like the soundtrack to an underwater church. In short, buy this record if you are looking for something a bit different and are tired of the endless recycled pop music clogging up the music charts.
