Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Matt Slocum continues to impress
I saw Sixpence live this past summer and they played all new songs... which was great on the one hand and disappointing on the other because they have so many great older songs. However, the performance indicated that the new album was going to be good. And, indeed, it is.

It's arguably their best album. It is mature, rich and intelligent. Even more amazing, this album gets better as the track numbers get higher. They didn't 'front-load' this album.

Slocum again proves he is one of the best pop song writers on the planet.

My hesitation to give it five stars stems from the fact that Sixpence again included a cover - Don't Dream It's Over. There She Goes (from their previous release) only served to give them some airplay but did not represent the band at all. It seems they again are relying on a 80's hit to give them some airplay.

What a shame.

Despite this one flaw, Divine Discontent deserves a lot more attention than it's ever going to get in the current American pop culture.

And that's a shame.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Best This Year? Yes - Better than their last? Maybe . . .
This was my most anticipated CD this year (and last year) - but after several delays, it's here, and it was WELL worth the wait!
While it lacks the cohesiveness that placed their previous studio album in my elite, all-time Top Ten, it is still packed with excellent music, some of the best this year along with The Elms's new release. The first two songs grab you immediately with their upbeat style. Track 4 is a superior remake of the 80s song "Don't Dream It's Over" by Crowded House. The album cruises along until Track 7, when a troublesome chorus pushes Leigh's expert voice JUST over the edge. But Track 8 nearly brings the album to a grinding halt with an out-of-place war protest song. Bands like U2 and The Cranberries have refined the protest song almost to an art form, but on this album from this band, it just interrupts the flow IMHO. But things pick up again with track 9 and right on through to one of the better end songs I've heard in awhile. Anyone familiar with the old-school stylings of Edie Brickell and New Bohemians will totally dig Track 10 (Eyes Wide Open).

Just two tracks shy of being a perfect album, this is by far my favorite album so far this year, and almost as excellent as their former album (better in some areas). So, whatever you are doing right now, STOP and get this album!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Divine Delight... Divine Comfort.... Divine Perfection....
Divine Pleasure... Purely Divine... Divine Poetry! After eagerly anticipating the release of this album since it's 2-year delay, I can truly say it was well worth every second of the "discontented" wait for me. The music has a soothing and comforting quality as it washes over and through you like the serene sound of ocean waves on the shore (especially "Melody Of You," "Dizzy" and "A Million Parachutes"). Even the rollicking "rock" song "Paralyzed," is strangely calming in a reverential way. Then there are the catchy pop tunes of "Breathe Your Name," "Tonight" and "Waiting For The Sun" that are refreshing with their peppy and upbeat melodies. The songs, "Eyes Wide Open" and "Down And Out Of Time," are well written by Leigh and have pop-rock melodies with "Eyes" being a bit more on the rock side with a "Beatlesque" sounding tune to it that will quickly grow on you.

Once again, Matt and Leigh have proven to be the perfect accompaniment to one another in their gifted songwriting and singing talents that present a unique, hauntingly beautiful, and simply amazing combination of diverse songs on this album. I never tire of listening to this CD. The songs play themselves over and over again in my head throughout the day like there is no stopping the melodies even when not listening to the CD. The orchestration and arrangements of the songs is truly brilliant. Matt's poetic and insightful lyrics and Leigh's ethereal and airy voice invoke a surprisingly emotional and touching quality that is intensely affecting. This CD is the most outstanding endeavor thus far by Sixpence. My only hope is that the CD will be well received and recognized for the depth and high quality of the musical composition and compilation.

While attempting to list some favorite songs of this CD, it was too difficult to choose because all of the songs are equally wonderful. That is the bottom line... divinely wonderful. So, I highly recommend this CD for Sixpence fans and anyone who appreciates beautiful melodies and exceptional lyrics. It is a must to have in your Sixpence collection.
