Average Rating: Rating: - A True Artist with an unbelievable voice........ I had never heard of Eva Cassidy until my attention was captured by a soul-touching rendition of Over the Rainbow. I stopped what I was doing and turned to see who I had just heard singing. It was the Nightline story about a beautiful, young singer who had tragically passed away at the tender age of 33, but left behind a collection of songs that stir emotion and tug at your heart. Her voice is a true gift from God and her style is one that is truly artistic! I can't remember when I have heard an artist or collection of music that I can just listen to and never get tired of hearing. My mother always said Patsy Cline was her favorite artist because you could feel the emotions she felt when she sang. Eva Cassidy is Exactly the same. If you truly focus on listening to her music, you can feel her passion for singing. Fields of Gold & Over the Rainbow, and People Get Ready bring tears to my eyes. I am thankful her parents were generous enough to share her with the rest of us. Her voice and music are ageless and her legacy will live on in those of us who understand, embrace and appreciate her courage to record what made HER happy, not what record producers wanted her to sing. I know she is in heaven, doing what she loves most, singing with that beautiful voice the Lord gave her. Rating: - 5 stars aren't enough... to put it simply...this album is breathtaking. When I popped it into my cd player I was just pulling out of the driveway...and then I heard her sing. I was completely blown away. Eva's voice is so pure, unique...and the way she delivers/interprets a song is just amazing. "Fields of Gold" was always a favorite song of mine...and no offense to Sting, but Eva's rendition of it really makes the words come to life. You can actually feel her emotions come pouring through with each note. Her range is also amazing...jazz, pop, gospel...done with such ease. Her rendition of "Wade in the Water" shows her gospel prowress...but then you hear her sultry and heartwrenching "Time is a Healer" and you wonder what genre or even what generation she can't handle. And to hear her sing "Over the Rainbow" and do it justice....what a phenomenon. (Next to Judy Garland, I didn't even think was possible for someone to sing that song.) This album is a compilation of several of her previous works. And it is unfortunate that Eva is no longer alive...but I think that her legacy will live on for a long time to come. I am so glad I took a chance and bought this cd. Rating: - The best surprise I've had in a long time I had never heard of Eva Cassidy until I received a package from my brother in the mail. It contained Songbird and Live at Blues Alley. I was stunned by both. Eva's interpretations of these songs grabbed me from the start and didn't let go. This is particularly impressive given the wide range of musical styles she covers. When I read the liner notes and learned of her backgraound, and of the fact that she was taken too early, I was saddened and couldn't help but feel that I had missed something special. As other reviewers here have stated, her voice is totally different than anything you've ever heard, yet it is also very familiar. At times I was reminded of Dusty Springfield's Dusty in Memphis, which is rather amazing company. Don't be alarmed by the fact that I only gave this disk four stars. I rarely give five stars -- I feel to receive that they need to have changed the course of music (at least to some extent). I'm not sure if this album will do that. But it will provide you with many hours of enjoyment. Buy it. Then buy a copy for someone you know who loves music. As I said, my brother gave it to me and I think of him every time I listen to it. Enjoy.
