Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Wonderful show!
What a fabulous show! I saw Hairspray in previews in NYC three days before it officially opened, and I must say that it was sheer joy put to the stage. The music is catchy, smart and wonderful, the acting is superb and hysterical, and the overall production is virtually flawless. The CD captures the heart of the show and the almost frantic energy of the cast. Perfectly cast, the entire ensemble gives it their best. Each song has its own personality, every character comes to life, it is musical comedy at its best. Harvey Fierstien as Edna Turnblad brings a smile to your face the minute you hear him sing, Tracy has a voice that can pierce through anything, and her spunky energy shines, and the rest of the cast sings brilliantly. The audience was electric when I saw the show, everyone was anticipating a ton of fun, and the show came through. I highly recommend this CD cast recording to everyone who loves musical comedies...NYC/Broadway can be proud of all of the high quality shows there right now, including Thoroughly Modern Millie, Urinetown, Producers, and The Full Monty. Thank you to all of the folks bringing these great shows to life!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - the crowning-jewel of the current Broadway season
HAIRSPRAY is, in my opinion, the crowning-jewel of the current Broadway season. It's the perfect musical version of the John Waters film (which has been a favorite of mine for years) and boasts stellar, Tony-worthy performances.

If Ricki Lake was the perfect Tracy Turnblad on film, then Marissa Jaret Winokur is the perfect Broadway counterpart. Her infectious voice permeates "Good Morning Baltimore", "Without Love", "The Big Dollhouse" and "Welcome to the 60's" with gusto and old-school showmanship. Winokur is a shoe-in for the Best Actress in a Musical Tony.

Harvey Fierstein is perfect as Edna (Divine would be proud!), and eats up his role with relish. His duet with Dick Latessa (as husband Wilbur), "Timeless to Me", is a real high-point of the score.

Linda Hart makes the most out of Velma von Tussle, the bitchy mother of Amber (Laura Bell Bundy), and makes the most out of the only weak song "(The Legend of) Miss Baltimore Crabs". Hart played Mazeppa in the 1993 TV-version of GYPSY which starred Bette Midler, and does a fantastic job with the material that she has here.

Rounding out the cast are Kerry Butler (a former Belle in BEAUTY AND THE BEAST) as Penny Pingleton, Clarke Thorell as Corny Collins, Matthew Morrison as Link, Mary Bond Davis as Motormouth Mabel and Corey Reynolds as Seaweed.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Broadway's Newest Hit
It opened last night and the reviews are in. "Hairspray" is a smash hit along the lines of "The Producers." It should play for years. The 1987 movie with the late Divine and Rikki Lake was one of John Walter's first commercial movie hits. They've done it again on Broadway. It has one of the best original scores that have been written for a musical in a number of years. Put on your headset and you'll think you're back in the 60's with big hair, bee bop music and cast of characters you'll fall in love with. "Good Morning Baltimore" sung by Marissa Jaret Winokur as Tracy Turnblad is dynamite. Mary Bond Davis as Motormouth Maybelle is reminiscent of many Motown artists. She has a tremendous voice and two powerful songs to show her talent. As Edna Turnblad, Harvey Fierstein is a riot. His distinctive raspy voice gives a very wonderful sound to Edna. While Divine is a hard act to follow Fierstein delivers the goods. "Welcome to the 60's", "Big, Blonde and Beautiful" and "The Big Dollhouse" are gems. Dick Latessa does a wonderful job as Wilbur Turnblad Edna's husband. They have a very touching duet "Your Timeless to Me."
There isn't a weak link in the cast. Mark Shaiman's score shines.
