Rating: - One word for this recording on "J&H" - Perfect.
I got this CD, without having heard any of the songs, on the recommendation from a friend. My friend was right - it's great music. In fact, it's downright sensational. I've since listened to the 1990 Concept Cast and the 1997 Broadway recordings, and neither surpassed the quality and raw talent that this recording boasts. The music and lyrics by Wildhorn and Briscusse are genius to begin with, and the talent of Linda Eder and Anthony Warlow make this CD set perfect. Eder's voice is beautiful, making songs like "Sympathy, Tenderness", "No One Knows Who I Am", and especially "A New Life" a treat to listen to. She brings the character of Lucy to life with the perfect mix of innocence and boldness that carry though in her singing. Warlow's performance defies adjectives one could use to describe it. Excellent does not even begin to describe it. His voice is incredible, and he gives contrast between Jekyll and Hyde that is very evident in his voice whenever he sings between the two characters. Just listening to the second track, "I Need To Know" is enough to put any doubts to rest on the quality of this recording or of Warlow's talent, and he carries this same faultlessness through the entirety of both CDs. In "I Need To Know", "Alive", and "Transformation" you can hear the energy that Warlow has through the magnitude of emotion he conveys with his voice. I cannot recommend it enough, and just words do not do it justice, it has to be heard.
Rating: - Please pass the tissue
I first heard this CD because a friend thought I would like it. Am I glad she did! Not really knowing much about the story or about the particular performers on this recording, I gave the CD a good listen in the car, by myself. Anthony Warlow's voice alone brought tears to my eyes. He is an incredible talent and I have since become an admirer of his work. In this CD it is particularly impressive how well he manages to leave no doubt in the listener's mind of when he is the idealistic Jekyll and when the evil Hyde emerges. The only disappointment I can find on this CD is Carolee Carmello as Lisa Carew. Her voice is somewhat appropriate for the part. She does well in "Possessed" and the beautiful "Take Me As I Am". However, she is obviously and easily outshone by Linda Eder in the role of Lucy and the songs Eder performs are much stronger. After my first few listens I felt somewhat annoyed by Lisa's character and actually thought that Lucy made a much better heroine. Some of my favorite tracks are "The World Has Gone Insane" and "No One Knows Who I Am", although I have to admit it's hard to pick favorites. This is definitely the must-have amongst Jekyll & Hyde recordings and a must-have for anyone who truly appreciates great music and amazing vocal performances.
Rating: - Jekyll & Hyde extraordinary!
I bought Jekyll & Hyde because I was a fan of Anthony Warlow from his stint as Enjolras in Les Miz. I was not disappointed. From the instant the chilling music starts, you will be enraptured.Warlow is the obvious standout of this recording, his amazing voice doing more that you ever dreamed it could in the duel title role. As Jekyll, he is perfectly tortured, and as Hyde he is evil, leaving you a bit scared of him. "This Is the Moment" is THE song for Anthony, that 16 second note at the end is thrilling! Other standouts are "Transformation"(the screaming is just great!), "Alive"(chilling), and "I Need to Know." Linda Eder is a extraordinary Lucy, and "Someone Like You" is her best song. She conveys the despair and hope of her character perfectly. Carolee Carmello as Lisa, called Emma in the new show, has a gorgeous voice. "In His Eyes", sung with Eder is beautiful, and most of her songs are with others, she manages to stand out. This is an amazing recording, with some incredibly talented performers and haunting music by Frank Wildhorn. While Jekyll & Hyde may not be for everyone's tastes, check it out if only for the superb singing.
