Average Rating: Rating: - If you've made it this far, just order it! Dar Williams is that rare breed of songwriter that can balance intelligence with humor. Perhaps no where is that gift more apparent than this, her first release. While this album lacks some of the radio-friendly pop songs that her subsequent albums possess, it more than makes up for it with it's evocative lyrics, intimate production, and simple beauty. Virtually each song on this album will make you laugh AND give you pause for thought. There is little question as to why Dar has gained such a strong following and become such an influence in contemporary folk music. If you have bothered to search the album out and are reading the reviews, do yourself a favor and add this one to your shopping basket. The Honesty Room might not change your life, but it will certainly enrich it. Rating: - The simple and intimate truths of Dar Williams In its interesting to look back at "The Honesty Room," Dar Williams' first album, and see the foundation being laid for what has followed. Right from the start it is clear that her best songs are when she is poignant rather than political. "When I Was a Boy" and "The Babysitter's Here" both speak to simple truths more than the overtly profound "The Great Unknown." But part of the charm of this album is watching a fledgling folk singer find her voice. There is the sense of fun in "Alleluia" and "Traveling Again" that are found later in some of Dar's most popular songs, as well as the willingness to try out other musical styles, ranging from the simple guitar opening of "In Love But Not At Peace" to the quick talking patter of "Flinty Kind Of Woman." Everything we have come to love about her later work is certainly found on Dar's first album. This would not be the first of her albums I wound recommend to introduce her work to you, but once you have acquired the taste you certainly would want to take a listen to how it all started. Rating: - artistry when i saw that one of my favorite folk musicians, dar williams, had taken the beauty of mark rothko's paintings and transferred it to music, i was overjoyed. "the mark rothko song" is wonderful, but only one of the gems on this albulm. "the babysitter's here" and "the great unknown" are two of my favorites as well. the narrative quality on some songs resonates better than on others, as occurs on her second CD, mortal city (where, after three or four times i could barely listen to "mortal city" anymore). the good definatly outweighs the bad, however, and dar's voice and her unique sound should be a definate addition to any folk lover's (or art lover's) collection.
