Rating: - John Mayer is the next best thing for pop rock
So pop rock might not be an accurate description of JM. I like to call it a little bit of Sting, Dave Matthews, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and some honey thrown in the pot to make what he does. John's music might be ambigious, but the emotion in his voice explains all the convictions that he sings about, and then some. Although the re-mixing on this album leaves a bit to be desired (I was somewhat disappointed by the changes in Wonderland), the addition of 3X5 was very much welcomed. From beginning to end, RFS helps bring out all types of emotions; No Such Thing, the opening track, Love Song For No One, and 3X5 invoking a need to dance, and the sweet but sad St. Patrick's Day instilling a feeling of sadness and sorrow, yet hope for a better day. This is one cd that you would like to have in your collection if you are a big acoustic fan, like DMB or Sting, or just want to find something a little different. Also, for the bit superstitious, try and figure out why there is no #13 track on the cd.
Rating: - Destined for Success
At a time when the music industry is being saturated with bubble-gum pop garbage and grunge bands trying to recapture the emotion of the early 90's, it is refreshing to hear an artist who is truly able to put out a couple of honestly good clean songs with catchy tunes. Granted, it is inevitable that John Mayer will be compared ruthlessly to Dave Matthews, and that eventually he will also achieve a similar type of mainstream success, but that still does not detract from the type of music he is making. For most college students, such as myself, who are sick of having to endure the perpetual radiowaves of Britney and N'Sync, John Mayer's simple melodies and gentle voice are a welcome arrival. "Love Song for No One" and "Your Body is a Wonderland" are beautiful in their simplicity, and the album itself reminds me in some ways of the clean sound that the new Weezer album had, although the mcusical style is obviously different. Mayer is like a less-edgy Counting Crows and in the mold of bands like Guster and The Lemonheads, although he probably would not like those comparisons. Regardless, I highly recommend this album. Watch out for this guy.
Rating: - Acoustic noodlings......
Dave Matthews fans...please grow up. I realize that Dave Matthews invented the acoustic guitar. Richie Havens, Paul Simon, James Taylor, Bob Dylan and Neal Young were just working on the prototypes for him.But other people are allowed to play Dave's invention. And they can do so without being compared to the 6-string love god himself. If you only like DMB, then good for you. But don't bother writing reviews of other artists...just run off and give 5 star ratings to all the DMB stuff, and then lock yourself in a darkened room in case you hear something new. Mayer's offering is a little immature, and a bit boring, but it shows promise. He is a better guitarist than he lets on here. Hopefully his next work will have some more body. And sound a bit more or less like DMB. Who cares which!
