Rating: - Super Awesome Wow!
Greetings...Normally it takes several shots of tequila, a bungee cord, and a couple of wet pennies to tickle my funny bone. That is, until I listened to Stephen Lynch's new album "Superhero." The album is Lynch's second, a follow up to his widely acclaimed and shunned (2000) release "A Little Bit Special." As a long time fan of Lynch, this album was particularly exciting because it was completely live. No studio mumbo jumbo, just Lynch, his guitar and, his "best" friend Mark Teich. I nearly went under a semi-truck because I was overcome by laughing laughter. It's been over a month since I purchased "Superhero" and it's still a daily necessity. However, I do want to warn anyone who is easily offended to stay away from this recording. Lynch's lyrics are hilarious, but not for the faint of heart. Selections such as "For the Ladies" and "Down to the ole' pub instead" are prime examples of Lynch's shocking routine. I'm not even going to mention "Priest" (an uptempo acoustic rock ballad about a Roman Catholic priest's adolescent love interest). But if offensive shock humor is your cup o' tea or even if you just want to hear a dead on Billy Corgan impression, then by all means purchase "Superhero." It's a comedic gem!
Rating: - An angelic voice with a devilish sense of humor.
I first caught the comedy stylings of Stephen Lynch while watching Comedy Central. I was confused at first, because I had no idea what was so funny about some guy singing this sweet little lullaby to comfort his sad daughter. Little did I know of the lyrics which were to soon follow ...'Superhero' is Lynch's second album (well...technically 3rd if you count a rare EP) and goes above and beyond the lowbrow standards he set with 'A Little Bit Special'. The material is much more racy and 'in your face', but IMHO Lynch's saving grace is he never really says anything to be mean - he's only trying to make you laugh. He pokes fun at everything from incest to immigration and has the distinct honor of recoding the most offensive pub song I've ever heard. :) Normally I cannot stand 'live' albums, but this album strike a chord with me because it gives an aural 'peak' into the energy behind his performances. It's quite evident Lynch is having as much fun performing as the audience is listening. He even gets to do a bit of improve on the titular song - which is much funnier and WAAAY dirtier than its appearance on is Comedy Central special.
Rating: - Superhero by Stephen Lynch
If you think Lynch's first cd "A little Bit Special" was good then you are going to love this one. The cd was recorded from live show(s) with participation from the audiance. Some of the songs on this cd reflect on some current events of today. Better listen to it before you play it to mom and dad or at a church social. Stephen keeps on getting better and better. Can't wait for his next cd....
