Rating: - Improvment...
A conscious departure from a previously established image is a venture which may often be misunderstood or in the case of Pink, "missundaztood." Bad grammar aside, Pink's sophomore session demonstrates a unique mastering of courage stemming not only from her expulsion of much of the R&B focused sound which made her a Top 40 standard, but a willingness to expose herself intimately through her lyrics and her vocals. The album has many standout tracks including the retrospective "Just Like A Pill," the surprisingly blues-based duet with Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler called "Misery" and even the intentionally perky "Get The Party Started." For this release, Pink plays up a funk-inspired influence on many tracks and utilizes her distinctive voice to tangibly tie emotion with the lyrics of the songs. There are probably a handful of people who will be slightly turned off by Pink's latest musical face-lift, but those who are willing to invest adequate listening time will gain an appreciation for this artist's talents. Pink provides decisive evidence that she can consistently evolve as an artist while simultaneously providing her dedicated fans with just enough tinted sass to continue praising her musical endeavors. It is odd that she has chosen to depart from the successful R&B sound which brought her initial success but I'm not complaining. Leave your reservations behind, this is cracking stuff.
Rating: - Good role model
I hear so many people complain: "It's such a shame Pink doesn't do black music anymore." Hello?! Rock IS black music. Rock, along with many other genres of popular music like rap, hip-hop, dance, and reggae are all branched out from R&B. And what's so cool about this is that all these elements can be found in Pink's new CD. Pink has great taste and knows how to broaden her ranges, and I'm down with that. I admire her. She without a doubt is an individual, and it's stated clearly in her lyrics that she has a lot of self-respect and does not want to be compared to all those pop moguls out there. I really like the songs. Each one has an awesome sound and message. I can really relate to songs like "Missundaztood", "RESPECT" and "18-Wheeler". I couldn't have said it better myself. "Numb" has a Nirvana/Green Day-like feel to it. "Lonely Girl" features a chorus sung by Linda Perry, who worked with Pink on this record. I think she is a musical genius to whip up instant-hit hooks, no filler from her. There is also another celebrity appearance from the outstanding Steven Tyler himself, you callaborated with Pink on "Misery". They sound amazing together, they both have raspy, blues-like vocals and can belt out such emotion. This album includes the smash hits "Get The Party Started", "Don't Let Me Get Me" and "Just Like A Pill". I really hope "18-Wheeler" is her next single, because that is definitally a hit.
Rating: - A breath of fresh air
Pink's sophomore album "Missundaztood" is definitively not what you'd expect after hearing her debut "Can't Take Me Home". She changed form R&B to a mixture of catchy pop/rock songs. A reason for this development is the involvement of Linda Perry (lead singer of one-hit-wonder-band "4 Non Blondes"), who wrote or co-wrote eight out of 14 songs, and even appears on "Lonely Girl".The album features a broad variety of styles from catchy party songs like the singles "Get The Party Started" (got overplayed) and "Don't Let Me Get Me" to self-reflecting and sad tracks like "Family Portrait" and "Gone To California". There are, however, a few outtakes like "Respect" or "My Vietnam (very corny lyrics). But songs like "Dear Diary" or "Just Like A Pill" make up for it. Another highlight on "Missundaztood" is "Misery", a duet with Aerosmith's Steven Tyler, which features a guitar solo by former Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora. This album offers you many ups and few downs. Pink's strong and unique is worth the purchase alone, as it sort of saves those songs which have weakpoints in the lyrical aspects. Pink has the potential to become a superstar and make music for years to come.
