As a young, inexperienced musician, I was fortunate enough to see a Moby Grape concert shortly after this record was released (at the Psychedelic Supermarket in Boston). I still remember that show as the best concert I've ever seen. Unfortunately, I saw them again a year later and, as many people know, things had taken a bad turn by then. I must confess I paid less and less attention to the band after that, but this first album has remained among my all-time favorites. I've recently changed careers after 30 years as a professional musician, a life I may not have had if this record hadn't ripped the top of my head off as a teenager. It makes me feel so great that general interest in this band is returning, even though one of the reasons for it is the death of Skip Spence. Nowadays I listen to jazz and classical, new rock and old rock, but Moby Grape will always be at the top of my list. Do yourself a favor and check it out. Rating: - AN TRULY UNDERRATED 60'S CLASSIC I'm probably much younger than the majority of the Moby Grape fans out there,but all i can say is that this is one of the greatest albums to ever be released.I'm 18 years old and have been listening to the grape for about 2 1/2 years now and they are definatley one of my favorite bands, and I listen to alot of music from that time. Not many bay area groups from that time period were as consistant as the grape were.This first album contains everything from blues and folk to psychedelic and pure rock and roll.Guitarist jerry miller is one hell of a musician who sounds like bb king when he plays his guitar.Visionary band leader skip spence also wrote some of the grapes and the jefferson airplanes best songs and released an underground epic titled Oar prior to his departure in 68'.I gaurantee if you like 60's music you will not be disapointed will this album. Rating: - Come drink the wine of their time. "Now what the hell kind of a name is Moby Grape" is the universal reaction I get from my friends. Then after they hear "Hey Grandma" and "Omaha"-two of the most profound singles to come out of San Francisco in '67, they say, "Whoa!" It's an awesome album of five different people bringing five different voices and backgrounds into a recording studio. You've got rave-up (the above songs) such as "Indifference", rustic themes: "805" "Someday" "Naked If I Want To Be" and just plain feel good songs "Come In The Morning" and "Ain't No Use". Part of the greatness of these songs is their brevity and the intense way they usher you past one mindset after another. If there is a theme to the album it is live for the moment. If there is a signature song for me on this album, I would have to say "Come In The Morning" just for the slap-happy imagery alone. Sadly this album is usually one of the higher priced CDs in the bins, but it is worth every penny you will spend on it. That Moby Grape album isn't just music, it's a way of life!
