Average Rating: Rating: - Too much compression for this range of talent This is a wonderful album (note! I said album). The band Styx always produced a great "rocking" effort, but their production was always compressed to give the album more sonic impact. I wish someone could restore the real dynamic range of this, and other Styx's recordings to a more"natural" sound. As much as I love this band, the CD format only highlights the limitations of the early recordings from Styx. I have heard this band in concert more than once, and can testify to their considerable talents,and unlimited range of sounds. Dennis DeYoung is the only singer I have ever heard who can sing with a "closed" mouth / "closed" vowel sound and sound wonderful! Think about how he holds out the word LAAAYDEEEE! That closed "e..." sound equals FABULOUS! When Tommy Shaw joined these friends from Chicago and sang "Crystal Ball" and "Shooz", well, what more could a rock fan ask for? Not every song was a hit, but every album was an adventure. I wish Tommy would write some more great STYX's songs. I hope JY continues writing, playing and contributing his hard-edged rock. I wish the "rock solid" rythym of the Chuck and John Panozzo brothers (truly a Chicago surname)could still add the foundation this great band was grounded on, And Oh! How I wish Dennis would write another,once in a life-time jewel like "Lady" on his Fender Rhodes piano in the family garage! Thanks guys,for a lifetime of musical enjoyment. Rating: - One Of Styx Best Albums This album is an excellent hard rock album. I bought this on 8-track in the 70's after hearing Lady Jennifer and Sweet Madmoiselle on the radio. I was blown away when I listened to it. Every song was rock at it's finest. This was Tommy Shaw's first album with Styx and was a big improvement. Crystal Ball and Ballerina are excellent hard rock tunes. After hearing this album I knew they were on the brink of superstardom which occurred with their next album The Grand Illusion. Rating: - One of Styx's Best For the debut of Tommy Shaw, I thought this cd couldn't have been better. Madmoiselle is the best song on the album. I have been a long time Styx fan and I'd have to say that this is the band at its best. If you want a great Classic Rock cd, buy this one, you WON'T be wasting your money!!
