Rating: - Animal Farm
In 1977, the punk movement was sweeping England. The young punk rockers derided the old war horse bands for their bombast and excess. Pink Floyd was included among the dinosaurs and in fact Sex Pistols lead singer Johnny Rotten caught the eye of the band's manager, Malcolm McLaren, by wearing a Pink Floyd t-shirt in which he hand wrote the word "sucks" underneath the name. Undeterred by such criticism, the band released Animals, a five song album that showed the band could write angry and critical songs without compromising their musical style. Two short, acoustic-based songs, "Pigs On A Wing" 1 & 2 open and close the album, but it is the three middle songs that make up the meat and heart of the album. "Dogs" is riveting with its barking dogs and electronic buzzing while slamming money hungry people. "Sheep" takes on people who blindly follow the heard. "Pigs (3 Different Ones)" is a brilliant piece of music, with a hypnotic keyboard filtering through the sound offset by a buzzsaw guitar. The lyrics are a scathing look at power hungry people. Animals is a triumph from Pink Floyd and showed that they were as relevant as any artist of their era.
Rating: - Venomous Social Commentary Triumphs
Pink Floyd's 1977 attack on society, "Animals" was produced right at the time that tensions in the band were beginning to peak; bassist Roger Waters had become the dominating principle songwriter, guitarist David Gilmour's ego was beginning to climax ("I was the driving musical force..."), and keyboardist Rick Wright was experiencing a bad case of writer's block, all of this leaving drummer Nick Mason in the dark. But the friction between the members of Pink Floyd couldn't have come at a better time; Waters was ready to write an album that dared to attack politics and society, a record full of venomous bombardment on such political figures as Margaret Thatcher, and censorship campaigner Mary Whitehouse. The bitterness within Pink Floyd itself certainly shows on "Animals." But for such a rude and outlandish album, that compares everyday human evil to the behavior of animals, it certainly helps the stunning atmosphere. Roger Waters' singing and lyrical/musical writing abilities foreshadow what directions he would take with his solo career (which kicked off in the 1980's). Nevertheless, "Animals" is a disturbing album that literally breaks down the behavior of human beings and compares them to that of dogs, pigs, and sheep; the "dogs" are those that will step on anyone to get to the top, the "pigs" are the ones that force their beliefs on the meak, while the "sheep" are forced to take the abuse, easily compared to the events of the cult headed by the "Reverend" Jim Jones. Great rock music for the cravers of outlandish lyrics, as opposed to, quoting the Ramones, "Tenth-generation Elton John, tenth-generation Led Zeppelin, or just over-produced." "Animals" is most likely one of the many roots of inspiration for other acts that dared to criticize the most powerful figures in the world.
Rating: - "Bow to the greatest album of all time", says a metalhead
Lemme get this straight. I'm a true Prog Rock lover and a part-time metalhead who loves Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Dark Angel etc. But even to me the greatest band that ever was, ever is and ever will be is Pink Floyd. And Animals is their finest album. I've seen lots of bands (metal and non-metal) trying to create dark albums. None have matched the sarcasm and darkness of this greatest masterpiece we've ever seen. From the bleak beginning of "Pigs on the Wing- Part 1", to the sarcasm directed at the corporate world of "Dogs", the criticism of politicians and censorship activists in "Pigs (Three different ones), the revolt in "Sheep" and somthing positive projected in our individuality in "Pigs on the Wing part 2", the wailing guitars of Gilmour (that guy talks with his guitar) and the brilliant vocals of Waters/ Gilmour (yes he does sing), is created a work of art that even Mozart, Beethoven, Bach and Mahler can never dream of. I pity the guys who can't dig Floyd. It's so sad that music which's only genius in full form is not appreciated. Not that Floyd haven't earned enough money and all that. (They still fill stadiums). But when people and media rate the Beatles, Zeppelin and Stones above Floyd, you know that it's a sad day for music. And it makes my blood curdle!!!
