Average Rating: Rating: - Don't laugh at Yanni. He's MUCH better than most Top40 Today Did you ever want to hear music that was simultaneously complex and fun to listen to? And if you want a vacation from the top-40-all-the-same-clone music on the radio today, try Yanni's 'Tribute.' I was skeptical at first, but now I'm glad I was open-minded enough to listen; and by doing so I have discovered a respect for Yanni and his music. Don't Laugh at Yanni -- He's extremely talented and this album shows it. Every single one of his musicians are head-and shoulders above most of the pop-radio [stuff] that we are avalanched with daily. In addition, you will hear pianos, strings, bass, trumpets, some MEAN keyboard playing, and plenty of other non-standard instruments that all blend together to form astounding and pleasant orchestrated music. One of the album's truly great tunes is "Waltz in 7/8." It is a song played in 7/8 time - far, far, far, above and beyond the synthesized pounding 4/4 or 2/4 heard most of the time today. And wait 'til you hear the keyboard solo! If you want a delightful break from the daily grind of top-40 BS, then give Yanni's 'Tribute' a listen. At the very least you will appreciate the talent of the musicians, and you'll probably find at least one tune on the album that you'll be humming or singing months from now. It is truly intelligent and beautiful music with the added bonus of catchy melodies. Rating: - Best eastern-western blend I've ever heard + a jazz touch! Being a Yanni fan I've loved his eastern influence in his music. But in this CD he blends it with a western "jazz touch" and full orquestra so well you no longer can geografically position his music. The rare wind instruments played by the venezuelan performer are breath-takingly played; the vocals, the video, the places, the performers ... I love it all! Rating: - Excellent album by one of the world's best New Age composers Having been a fan of Yanni since I discovered "Live at the Acropolis" I waited eagrly for his next album. Tribute was more then what I expected. First off I'll make it clear that although I'm a fan of all his work, I truely love his live albums. Backed by excellent solo musicians and a full symphony orchestra, they present his songs at their best and fullest and are more sophisticated, and engage the listener much more. I find his studio recordings on the other hand are more dry and better suited as pleasant "background" music. I have not heard much of his studio recordings though, so I may end up taking that back. Between his two live albums "Acropolis" and "Tribute," Tribute is my favorite. On this album it seems that Yanni gets a little more daring in this album compared to "Live at the Acropolis as he engaes more unusual world instruments, melodies and arrangements. The opening song "Deliverance" will show this well. Having an exotic and spiritual sound to it, it shows a different side of Yanni, one who isn't afraid to delve himself more in "World Music" combining Eastern and Western styles of music. The song is elevating and beautiful. Niki Nana, the last song on the album is another great example of this shift in Yanni's direction. In this song one can hear the African influence presented in a full choir, surrounded by everything from a tribal drum solo to the song opening up with the drone sound of the didgeridoo. The album also contains many elements of singing in this album - from choir to solo singing. In many of the songs in which singing is present it is often used to augment melody with beautiful effect. "Southern Exposure is a great example of this. The instrumentals shine just as bright though, and "Nightingale" is perhaps one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in a very long time. The song has an eastern influence, and shines with a beautiful flute playing accompanied by elegant piano and orchestra. All in all I would say this is an excellent album. If your a fan of New Age, World Music, or Classical, I would say there's a very good chance of finding this album appealing. The songs each have their own unique personality and consequently play on a large range of human emotions allowing for a diverse audience to enjoy this album. I use this album all the time to relax myself, and inspire me. Whether your an "active lister" who like to pay close attention to the music, or someone who prefers music as "something in the background," this album treads that fine line where both qualities are present. Please note that if you are new to Yanni, I would recommend you check out both "Tribute" and "Acropolis" as they are both beatiful albums, and each displays different sides of his music. If you are already a Yanni Fan or loved "Acropolis" this album is a must have and highly recommended!
