Rating: - An Enjoyable Collection...With A Few Exceptions
Yes, this collection may seem incomplete, as it only focuses on Rod's hits from 1975 to 1978, but yet, it is a collection that should satisfy many casual fans. I say that, may I warn you, even though GREATEST HITS has a few noticable flaws: first off, hearing "Maggie May" in this collection does not feel very comfortable at all. (But if Stewart wanted to feature his "greatest hits" in this album, then where is "Handbags and Gladrags"? Where is "You Wear It Well"? Where is "Cut Across Shorty"?) Maybe "Stone Cold Sober," "Ain't Love A Bitch" or "Blondes Have More Fun" should have taken its place. Oh, well. What is featured here is fine, even though a number of these songs fade out too early. GREATEST HITS showcases some of Stewart's greatest ballads ("Tonight's The Night," the Cat Stevens cover of "The First Cut Is The Deepest"), his potential to sing effective uptempo pieces (of course, the guilty plesure-laden "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?") and his ability to make memories out of performances that do not rank among his greatest ("Hot Legs," "You're In My Heart").
Rating: - THE BEST
Rod has always had one or two really good songs per cd. And this has always been the case, with the exception of a cd here and there. GREATEST HITS offers all great songs, with out a bad one in the bunch. Maggie May, Hot Legs, are two of best songs from the 70's. Your in My Heart, is a beautiful song, set to acoustic guitars, that swells to high point at the end, that has you singing along with him. Sailing is another great acoustic song. I Dont' Want to Talk About It, Tonight's the Night, I Was Only Joking, and The First Cut is the Deepest, are slower songs, and Rod pulls them off good. Tonight's the Night, was originally banned from radio, because the lyrics were considered suggestive, but by today's standards they are rather tame. THe background singers in Gerogie make the song. Da Ya Think I'm Sexy, is a good song, but it's one of thoses songs, that you really don't want to admit you like, or won't turn up loud in public...This is really the best of.
Rating: - The Very Best of Soft Rock's # 1 Male Vocalist
As a "kid of the 70s" I grew up with Rod Stewart and his mellow songs telling of tragedy, heartbreak and puppy love. Who can forget the story of "Maggie May", the experienced woman breaking young boys' hearts. Then there is the timeless love ballad "You're In My Heart-You're In My Soul" and the dreamy "Sailing" (which spent weeks at #1 all across Europe). Rod Stewart's biggest chart success "Tonight's The Night" is also included, as is the Disco Anthem "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?", the story of a one-night-stand. Also included in this Greatest Hits collection is the full-length version of "The Killing Of Georgie" about the murder of a gay teenager -- Rod Stewart appeals most to an adult contemporary audience, even if teenagers were always a considerable part of his fandom. With nearly 4 decades in the entertainment business, Rod Stewart certainly has secured his spot in Rock & Roll History. Did you know that it was (a then unknown) Rod Stewart who played the harmonica solo on the 1963 Millie Small hit "My Boy Lollipop"? -- This guy is at the very top of my list of favorites (and believe me, it's a long list!). You can't go wrong with this sampling of his very best material. Highly recommended! *****
