Average Rating:
Rating: - An excellent recording of a true musical theatre classic.
"Some People." "Everything's Coming Up Roses." "Together." Ethel Merman got some of her most indentifiable songs from Gypsy, and this recording demonstrates why. But her powerful voice is only one reason to buy this cast recording--the music is excellent, and the rest of the cast extremely entertaining as well. Though the extra material included in this version isn't quite as essential as has been the case in other recordings in this series, this remastered version preserves this classic the way it was meant to be heard. Don't miss it!
Rating: - Only Ethel Merman
Finally, I own a remastered recording of this musical. Having heard the Tyne Daly version, I am convinced there is only one Rose: Ethel Merman. She is not dainty around the songs, but composer Jule Styne seemed to be aware of that as he composed music that was adapted to her lungs. But that's what many of us paid for. We want to hear Merman belt out a song and make us soar as only a good belter can do it. Rosalind Russell who is the quintessential Auntie Mame could not replace Merman. Fortunately the musical and the album give Merman plenty of songs to sing. Even "Small World" a gentler song gets full volume. And this remastering makes it an even greater pleasure to hear.
Rating: - The Perfect Musical
"Gypsy" is know thought out the theatre world as really the perfect musical, and that is what this is. It has a truly brilliant score, music by Jule Styne and amazing lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. Ethel Merman also showers her talent off in this wonderful CD. Her major song, "Some People" is sung magnificently and really is one of the best songs in musical theatre and "Rose's Turn" is just a hunting song that really displays such power and emotions, only Sondheim could have worked on it-just amazing. Yet then there are also the amazing classics to this CD. "Let Me Entertain You" sung by Sandra Chuch is such a good song and she sings it with such beauty and grace, it will melt your heart. I would have to say that if you are looking for witch cast of "Gypsy" you should bye, this CD is great due to Ms. Merman, yet the Angel Lansbury CD is also quite good. Yet overall, I find that this is really the best recording of "Gypsy." There is also four bonus tracks witch are very nice.
