Rating: - You Cannot Have An Army Without Music
This is one fabulous soundtrack! The voice of Mary Fahl is exquisite and Bob Dylan is classic. The orchestral arrangements are extremely evocative. Emotions are evoked, spirits are stirred and sorrow is palpable through this powerful music. The vocals underlying several of the pieces speaks of the spirit of the past. Rarely am I so moved listening to music. The bonus DVD really is a bonus. The additional period music is a treat - hearing it performed on the correct instruments in the correct manner. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars! Robert E. Lee is quoted as saying "You cannot have an army without music" - You cannot have a movie of this epic proportion without equally epic music. Edelman, Frizzel, Mark O'Connor, Mary Fahl and Bob Dylan have all created or performed music of the highest calibre.
Rating: - THE BEST OF THE BEST!
Soundtrack Review: The soundtrack to the Civil War Historical Epic "Gods and Genreals" features what has to be the best orchestral score ever written. Instead of your standard epic-sounding music, composers John Frizzell ("Thirteen Ghosts) and Randy Edelman ("Gettysburg") have created an operatic-type score. From the midieval sounds of tracks like "Gods and Generals" and "VMI Will Be Heard From Today" to character-driven pieces like "Loved I Not Honor More" and "Let Us Cross Over the River." And the piece "To The Stone Wall," written exclusively for the scene where the 20th Maine charge the heights at the battle of Fredericksburg, has a more heroic feel than an action feel. The Irish fit prominently in the film, and the piece "These Brave Irishmen," featuring Paddy Moloney of the Chieftans and violin player Mark O'Connor, is the best track and, in my opinion, the best instumental piece ever written. The soundtrack also features "Cross the Green Mountain," Bob Dylan's best song ever, and "Going Home," by Mary Fahl. Anyone who is a fan of serious music will want to buy this, the best soundtrack ever put out. Soundtrack Grade: A+
Rating: - Nice music videos,
The DVD contains video for the first and last track of the album. Watching Dylan pass through the Civil War characters, like a musical ghost, really adds dimension to the accompanied audio track. The DVD also contains several (six?) approximate 2-3 minute clips not released in the movie. These have a general Irish theme - the quality is good, though I liked the music videos the most. The clips without context seemed somewhat abrupt. They appear to be direct cuts, not edited like in a movie trailer. The remaining instrumentals are high quality arrangements, with a subtle period tone.
