Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - An Improvment Over 11th
I only give it 4-stars because it IS after all a re-hash of hits, and not a real original studio, otherwise "Furthermore" would get the highest marks. That said...I love this CD... It took a bit to get accustomed to the simplicity of the studio disk, but it grows on you VERY vast. Jars said they wanted to emphasize subtleties with this album, and succeeded at it far better than on The Eleventh Hour. On that album they tried to make a simple sound with high-res engineering and it came out sounding a bit too "thrown together at the last second." and cheap (See Dave Matthews Band's "Everyday"). The studio disk on "Furthermore" is quiet, contemplating, and a real hook. Odmark's guitar work is awesome, but you gotta listen for it. The occasional piano loops are also thrown in at exactly the right times. Highlights are: "Overjoyed" with jazz replacing spacey rock, "Redemption" with the banjo, and "Love Song..." without the drum machine. As for the live CD, it slowly builds and climaxes awesomely with a 10-minute long "Worlds Apart." Also enjoy a rarity on Jars tours: Strings and a gospel choir. Dan Haseltine's voice really lets loose in ways never hear before on their studio albums. This is easily their best since "If I Left the Zoo," and maybe even "Much Afraid." So listen to it more than once, and let it grow on you.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Treasure in these Jars?
Being a fan of "Jars of Clay" I eagerly awaited Furthermore. With one cd full of acoustic re-workings of classic songs such as "Love Song for a Savior," "Liquid," and "Frail," and live recordings from the boys in concert, the album already looked promising.

CD one will not disappoint any longtime Jars fans and will introduce new listners to the incredible acoustic talents of Jars of Clay. Tracks that clearly stick out include "Liquid"(which is completely done over with a catchy acoustic guitar riff), a new track entitled "The Valley Song (Sing of Your Mercy)", and "Frail". A very intimate vibe reaches and ensnares the listner during this CD.

CD Two is the guys jamming out to the best songs Jars have written. Stand-outs include "Revolution," the choir group that assists the band in "I'm Alright," and the touching "This Road." However, the greatest track on this CD and possibly the whole album is "Worlds Apart." Jars take this already powerful song to a new level that will touch many listners.

If you are familiar with Jars of Clay, purchasing Furthermore is a no-brainer. If you are not, and you want to listen to one of the greatest bands today, musically and lyrically, Furthermore is for you. Find the treasure that is in these earthen vessels...

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Buy it for the second disc!
"Furthermore" is a set of two discs: "From the Studio" (10 tracks) and "From the Stage" (11 tracks). The studio disc is mostly new versions of previously released songs, with three new tracks; the sound on this disc is probably closest to "If I Left the Zoo." The stage disc draws from different albums and different sounds and has more variety.
I've always hurried to buy each Jars of Clay album. I am not a fan of live albums from any artist, but oddly enough in this collection I like the stage disc best: it has more energy and more musical variety. I bought this set for the studio disc (because it's a good price!) but will probably listen to the stage disc more. One really nice touch is the way the last track ("Worlds Apart") works equally well as the close of a disc, the close of a concert and the close of a worship gathering.
