Average Rating: Rating: - One of my favorite albums. . . For a few days now, I've been trying to think of what I can say about Simon & Garfunkel, but I haven't been having much luck. I've tried drawing parallels to every other artist and group I can think of, but no other musicians are quite like this classic duo. Today, it dawned on me -- they're original; that's why I like them so much! In today's world of music, listeners automatically expect all music to fall under a predefined category. When something totally unique and different is playing, like Simon & Garfunkel, our first instinct is that something is wrong with our ears! But, alas, nothing is wrong with my hearing -- I just realized that Simon & Garfunkel's success lies in their sonorous tunes and talented songwriting. Time-honored hits like 'The Boxer,' 'Homeward Bound,' 'Mrs. Robinson,' 'Cecilia,' 'I am a Rock,' 'Sound of Silence,' 'Scarborough Fair,' and 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' have distinguished the duo in the music industry. Amazon classifies these songs as 'folk rock,' but I prefer to think of them as something else -- something majestic, poetic, soothing. . . a paradoxical sound that is both distinct and enigmatic. The songs on this album encompass a wide variation of musical dynamics; some are fast and loud (Cecilia; I Am a Rock; Mrs. Robinson), others are slow and soft (Bridge Over Troubled Water; Scarborough Fair; Sound of Silence), and still there are some songs that are both fast/slow and loud/soft (Homeward Bound; The Boxer; The 59th Street Bridge Song). The fact that these songs are still popular after thirty-plus years shows that they have a timeless quality: universal appeal. It suffices to say that there is something for everyone on this collection of Simon & Garfunkel's best songs. And besides the popularity factor, their excellence is also signaled by the fact that, most likely, there will never be music quite like theirs. If you're looking for a high-quality CD to enjoy or give as a gift, you can't go wrong with 'The Best of Simon & Garfunkel.' Rating: - My two favorite boys. For years, I have affectionately regarded the works of Simon & Garfunkel as "dad music," meaning that because it was something my father listened to, the music of S&G must therefore be popular only among other people over the age of thirty. As time progressed, however, I grew to love the two even more than my father did, and, tired of stealing his records, I decided to purchase my own CD. I found myself soon overwhelmed in the task of selecting the CD... the one that embodied the spirits of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. "The Best of..." CD is exactly what I was looking for. As still a "lesser-learned" fan of S&G, this CD provided a useful compilation of many of their better known songs for me to become familiar with. I would suggest it to any long-time fan of the pair as well as to those newly introduced -- it is that good. Personal favorites include "The Sound of Silence," "America," "For Emily...," and "I am a Rock." S&G have mastered the art of combining poetic lyrics with angelic vocals. This CD is definitely in my top ten! Rating: - Very nice I was very happy to acquire this CD to replace my old, ugly-sounding 'Simon and Garfunkel's Greatest Hits' CD. This new one is a lot better. The sound quality is wonderful. The songs are crisp and clear and vibrant now. Also, it's been thoroughly expanded into a fat 20-tracker. The live versions of several songs from the old CD have now been replaced with the more well-known studio versions, a most welcome change. No more of that annoyingly loud applause on 59th Street Bridge Song or Homeward Bound. This CD is wonderful and probably the best value right now in the Simon and Garfunkel catalogue.
