Average Rating: 4.92 out of 5 stars

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - like everyone else said, it is one of the best albums ever
Basically, this is one of the only cds i have where i dont skip a track or put one song in front of another. when you listen to the cd, you start with track 1 (boy in the bubble) and dont do anything but listen until the last note of the last song is over. There are many different types of songs on this cd, but they all flow together perfectly. Still, my favorite songs are "Graceland", "Crazy Love", and "Diamonds..." Although the music itself is outstanding, i think its Simon's strange and meaningful lyrics that make his songs great. My favorite: "Losing love is like a window in your heart..."

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Probably the best album of the 80s
Not much good came out of the 80s besides the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (and even THEY weren't good then). And actually, Paul Simon didn't come out of the 80s, either. He and Garfunkel had been recording some time before then. But "Graceland" came out of the 80s, and God, am I glad.

All things taken into account, this is simply a fantastic album. There isn't one bad song on it. The entire album is like one big dream unfolding song by song. All the tracks are so much fun. This is the ultimate road-trip or pick-me-up album. It's so full of hope you just can't help but smile when you listen to it.

One reason for this is Simon's never-ending penchant to utilize new kinds of music, which he found for this album in the form of Chikapa "Ray" Phiri and his South African band, Stimela. Phiri arranged many of the songs heard on the album. But Simon didn't stop there. For the zydeco swing of "That Was Your Mother," he enlisted New Orleans' own Rockin' Dopsie and his band, and he collaborated with Los Lobos on the upbeat closer, "All Around the World (or The Myth of Fingerprints).

The highlights are, well the WHOLE album, but the true standout tracks (to me, anyway, everyone has their favorite) are probably the driving opener, "Boy in the Bubble," featuring a proud accordion and one of the greatest choruses ever penned ("These are the days of miracle wonder/This is a long distance call/The way the camera follows us in slo mo/The way we look to us all/The way we look to a distant constellation/That's dying in the corner of the sky/These are the days of miracle and wonder/So don't cry baby, don't cry"). Also be sure to check out "I Know What I Know," whose lyrics and hook will make you laugh, and "Under African Skies," a duet with Linda Ronstadt that's just too beautiful to skip over.

In fact, the only song that I don't really love on this album is "Crazy Love, Vol. II," and it's not that it's a bad song... it's probably just that I want too badly to get to "That Was Your Mother" to hear what might be the best one-liner I've ever heard ("I saw this girl there/She was pretty as a prayer book/Sweet as an apple on Christmas Day/I said good gracious/Can this be my luck?/If that's my prayer book/Lord let us pray!").

Overall, the brilliance with which this album was constructed, both musically and lyrically, is a testament to what an unbelievable talent Paul Simon is. This album needs to be in everyone's music collection. Look at it this way: you might as well have gotten SOMEthing out of the 80s!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - from distant times and places but eternally relevant
paul simon with this collection of classics has given us an album that attempted a fusion of several styles and ultimatley transcended all the individual genres to create and sustain a sound and feel that is brilliant, haunting, hopeful and simply masterful in its range of human emotion and experience. this is probably the most important album to come out of the 80's. the surreal yet vague urban familiarity of boy in the bubble, the warmth and heady travellin'spark of the title track, the magic and the muse of diamonds on the soles of her feet, the arty playfulness of you can call me al, the world spirit feel of myth of fingerprints..all bear testimony to this great man's penchant for strong lyrics of pristine beauty and his capacity to make love, loss and life intersect in nostalgic tones to define and capture identity in sudden flashes of moment and meaning. an amazing album, a genuine masterpiece, the kind of stuff for which we listen to music in the first place, to lean into the multi layered experience of the chaos of cultures, meanings and symbols. to make it grow into the texture of our lives and to breathe in and exhale it all in acts of complete, oceanic realization. too good, simply a classic in the fullest sense of the word..please buy this album and keep listening to it until you see the distant constellation of stars burn out and reappear again.
