Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Psychedelic blues jam
Meddle is a stellar record and in my opinion, one of the four definitive Pink Floyd albums. The other three being Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and Animals. Naturally, my most glaring omission is The Wall, which I feel can be a little difficult to digest for the casual fan. Most of it's better moments are staples on classic rock radio anyway.

From the opening riff of One of These Days (perhaps the birth knell of what was to become heavy metal) to the closing bars of Echoes (a gargantuan, esoteric, eclectic epic), Meddle is one of the few Floyd albums that combines musical elements as diverse as hard rock, blues, jazz and psychedelia. The influence of the latter especially began to wane in the later Waters-led period (Animals, The Wall).

It is also one of the few albums that is not thematic in content (as opposed to Dark Side, WYWH, Animals, The Wall, Final Cut, etc) and is individually accessible on a song-by-song basis, ranging from the Beach Boys-like San Tropez to the Mississippi-Delta-Blues-inspired tongue-in-cheek Seamus.

Some argue that the production of Meddle does not match their later work, and though this may be true, it is this 'grit' that gives Meddle a superflous aura.

On the whole, a superb Pink Floyd album and a worthy buy for anyone who truly appreciates the power of their music.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Unique work flowing with raw talent and shrouded in mystery
First, I must say that this was the first Pink Floyd album I ever owned. Not a second has gone by that I am thankful for my purchasing decision. Pink Floyd is definitely the best psychadelic band of all time and one of the leading commercial bands, due largely to the success of their later releases "Dark Side of the Moon" and "The Wall." Each song touches something. Each David Gilmour guitar riff and Roger Waters lyric just gives you that gut melting feeling that only a handful of bands can provide (including The Beatles, John Lennon's solo work, Led Zeppelin, and Queen). The first cut, "One of These Days," provides a great taste of basslines mixed with steady percussion and guitar riffs. Although no vocals appear on the first track (any descernible ones, anyway), it still is a very good song. "A Pillow of Winds," the subsequent track, is one of the most relaxing songs ever made. The constant guitar melody and difficult toplay basslines combine to form a drowsy, relaxing, and beautiful song that reall ynever gets old. The next song, "Fearless" never let's you down. It is also very dreamy like "A Pillow of Winds" but is more fast paced and consistently rock & roll with excellent melody and guitar work. "San Tropez," perhaps one of the best cuts on the album, has a jazzier sound. It is the type of song that you'd hear in some futuristic, sci-fi jazz bar(as wierd as that sounds, it still pretty much describes the song). "Seamus" is probably Floyds most country sounding song ever recorded( as difficult as that is to imagine). A nice, slow beat and more acoustic sounding guitar work make this song a Pink Floyd classic (not to mention the perpetual synth. made dog sounds). "Echoes," the twenty three minute opus begins with a creepy submarine sonar sound and never ceases to not conform to what you think will happen next. It still fits though. By fit, I mean it still ahs that gut melting feeling as previously described).

To be concise, this is a great, underrated Pink Floyd album which features some of their most unique and best songs. If you've heard Floyd in the past and enjoyed their different style, then you will enjoy this album.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - "A million bright ambassadors of morning"
Meddle is one of those albums that most Pink Floyd beginners will not know about. At the risk of sounding like a fanatic, it's my opinion that if you can't understand why this recording is magnificent, you really aren't a Floyd fan at all. This album should have been titled "Introduction to Dark Side of the Moon" because it proves the band was ready to create thier opus.

The first three tracks sound like classic Floyd, flowing nicely, and of course containing incredible lyrics. "One of these days" sounds like demonic ax on the loose. It's only for show, the next two songs are extremely mellow. "Pillow of Winds" is a dreamy and poetic piece. Perfect for unwinding after the day. "Fearless" is the most recognisable song on the record, the only one I've heard from "Meddle" on the radio. The next two tracks are real wild cards. Who knew Pink Floyd had a playful side? Despite thier bad press I still enjoy them. "San Tropez" is so unexpectidly bluesy, and "Seamus".....well um, I still like "Seamus"!

The sixth track is of course the coupe de grace of "Meddle". I'm listening to "Echoes" as I am typing. You know you've found a great song if you can feel fear, joy, lust and sadness in just one melody. "Echoes" is that song. Don't be fooled by the 23+ running time. I say why complain about more of a good thing?
