Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - "Then I awoke, is this some kind of joke?"
This album does have some great moments on it, although it's not too many people's favourite Stones' albums. It was recorded in the midst of Mick, Keith and Brian's infamous drug busts. This album features one of their sweetest ballads "She's a Rainbow" (at least until the violins screech a rather eerie coda with an abrasive guitar riff to follow), which helped sell a few gaudy looking computers in the 1990's. "2000 Light Years From Home" was supposedly contrived from the alienation Mick felt during the infamous drug busts and there's a cool sounding mellotron provided by Brian and some eerie piano work from Nicky Hopkins (I think this was his debut with the Stones). "Citadel" could fit in as part of any 1960's sci-fi soundtrack (Brian provides saxophone and probably a glockenspiel, whatever that clinking sound is at the chorus and Keith's guitar riff is a nice touch). Bill Wyman contributes his 1st song as he sings "In Another Land" (features a cool harpsicord by Nicky). "2000 Man" is sort of a country rock meets Motown song (that's Bill snoring at the beginning). "The Lantern" has some eerie lyrics set to a gospel-flavoured piano and some funky guitar licks. "Sing This All Together" is a singalong which supposedly features John and Paul in the chorus. Not as clever is "Sing This All Together (See What Happens)" as Mick moans and screams in the microphone for 5 minutes, not unlike "Goin' Home." Keith sounds bored playing the same chords for 5 minutes. You can hear Mick audibly asking at the beginning "Where's that joint?" "On With the Show" is about a sleazy pub- "Your wife will never know that you're not really working late!" The worst song is "Gomper" with a sloppy repetitive jam ( a sitar, a Hammond organ and some self-conscious Eastern philosophy). All in all, not a bad album but the Stones would prove on the next album Beggars Banquet that they were the World's Greatest Rock and Roll Band, not the World's Greatest Psychedellic Band.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Candy and Cathy...hope you both are well!
As any serious music historian knows, this album was the Stones' "Sgt. Pepper." It sounds like no other release in their impressive catalog. And it IS a departure. But, that's the point! Why have so few people NOT gotten it. Are they simply NOT LISTENING? "Satanic Magesties" is an awesome piece of work. And psychedelia never sounded so good as it does on the brilliant "2000 Light Years From Home." And it sounds great on "Sing This All Together," "Citadel," and "In Another Land" (Bill Wyman's 'underwater' vocals are both freaky and effective for the style of the song...NOT thin or weak like a reviewer stated!). And "2000 Man" and "She's A Rainbow" are two of the bands best efforts to date. Overall, a very much underappreciated and underated Stones album. Just give it a chance and listen to it with an open mind (and ears) and I think you'll discovery a true masterpiece. It's different all right...But, in keeping with the "Spirit Of '67" and the band itself...it's a GAS! GAS! GAS!

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Could have been better
There are some classic Stones tracks on this album. Even Billy Wyman gets a turn and doesn't do too bad with the trippy In Another Land.

But when you look at what else was recorded and released during this time period, it's a wonder this didn't turn out better. Here's how TSMR *should* have looked like:

Side 1
She's A Rainbow
Citadel
In Another Land
2000 Man
We Love You

Side 2
Jumping Jack Flash
Dandelion
Child of the Moon
2000 Light Years From Home
Sing This All Together

Now THAT *could* have been hailed as a psychedelic-era milestone.
